Shanta Gold Limited topped production of 100,000 oz #gold produced in 2023 for the first time as its new mine at Singida in Tanzania continued its good start. Singida helped offset a moderate slowdown at New Luika, also in Tanzania, said Eric Zurrin, Shanta’s chief executive. For the current year, Shanta expects output to rise to between 100-106,000oz at all-in-sustaining costs of US$1,300- 1,350 per oz. Over the next four years, production is forecast to rise to an average of 169,00oz a year and the higher costs in 2024 reflect more exploration to achieve the target said the statement. Identifying Challenges: The National Mining Corporation (STAMICO) has conducted a comprehensive survey across nine regions, pinpointing four primary challenges faced by small-scale miners. These include a lack of understanding regarding mining laws and regulations, insufficient geological data, challenges in securing funding, and difficulties in accessing designated mining areas. 2. Government Initiatives: In response, the Tanzanian government is stepping up! Initiatives include: - Educational programs to deepen miners’ understanding of the sector’s legal and regulatory framework. - Provision of drilling equipment to enhance operational efficiency. - Facilitation of connections with financial institutions and equipment suppliers to improve access to necessary resources. - Allocation of specific areas for mining to ensure a structured and sustainable mining environment. 2. We are thrilled to announce that Limeco Resources, a key project under Firering Strategic Minerals plc (LON), which is a corporate client of Shard Capital, has been awarded a 392.51-hectare exploration licence adjacent to its current project site in Zambia. This development significantly enhances Limeco’s quicklime project, which is set to begin phased production later this year.   Key Highlights:   Expanded Resource Potential: The new licence could increase Limeco’s Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) by an additional 60 to 70 million tonnes, supporting their robust 30-year life-of-mine operations.   Strategic Advantage: Positioned to meet Zambia’s growing copper production needs, Limeco will soon be producing 600-800 tonnes of quicklime per day, reducing the region's reliance on imports. The world needs Simandou. Best wishes of success to Guinea, Rio Tinto, Chinalco, WCS, Winning and other partners in the development of Simandou. It is a privilege and a challenge for anyone to work in such large-scale and impactful project with so many dimensions of complexity (name it, you have it, technical, infrastructure, scale of the mines, rail, port, social, political, contractual, financing,...), with the opportunity to create a new template for social and economic development and for playing a key role in greening steel. Not least because of the passion and resilience of the people working on it. Glad to see a new beginning for what has to become a world-class project. This is the time of the resurgence of mega-projects and they will all need to be done better than before - better partnership ("inclusion and governance") is one of the keys.

Otjikoto spends nearly N$2bn on local procurement B2Gold Namibia’s Otjikoto Mine spent US$105 million - nearly N$2 billion at the current exchange rate - on local procurement last year. The Otjikoto Mine has consistently focused on improving local procurement levels since initial construction, B2Gold Corp. said in its Sustainable Mining Report released this week. Last year, 61% of the procurement came from in-country purchases, with approximately 3.7% out of onshore purchases spent directly on small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the mine’s area of influence.  The gold mine is located in the North, between Otjiwarongo and Otavi, about 300 km from Windhoek. B2Gold Namibia has over 1 400 suppliers enrolled in its database, of which approximately 95% are Namibian registered and 4% are South African registered, the company said. Otjikoto also encourages its suppliers to support local social development programmes.  “Since 2022, B2Gold Namibia has been facilitating a programme to increase local content opportunities through the Cross-Sector Collaboration to Prioritise Local Procurement, a group of Namibian companies and suppliers. IRMA is a groundbreaking system designed to measure environmental and social responsibility in industrial mining, setting a global benchmark for best practices. As part of the team implementing this initiative at Unki Mine, I contributed significantly to our environmental management efforts. My role involved developing and overseeing strategies to meet IRMA’s stringent environmental criteria, ensuring our practices aligned with international best practices for sustainability. I am thrilled to announce that we successfully achieved the IRMA 75 certification! This certification reflects our dedication to transparency, accountability, and excellence in responsible mining. IRMA's standard, developed over a decade with input from over 100 stakeholders—including mining companies, NGOs, labor unions, and communities—provides a robust framework for ensuring environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Achieving the IRMA 75 rating means Unki met core critical requirements and at least 75% of the criteria in business integrity, planning for positive legacies, and social and environmental factors. Our commitment to IRMA aligns with Anglo American Platinum's sustainable mining plan, aiming to have all operations assessed against credible responsible mining standards by 2025. Enhancing Local Participation and Corporate Social Responsibility in the Mining Sector We are thrilled to share the significant strides made by the Ministry in promoting local participation and ensuring corporate social responsibility (CSR) within the mining industry. Local Content Engagement: As of March 2024, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Mining Commission, has diligently reviewed and approved 797 out of 801 plans aimed at involving Tanzanians in mining activities. This demonstrates our commitment to empowering local communities and fostering their active participation in the mining sector. Job Creation: Through our concerted efforts, the mining sector has generated a total of 19,356 jobs. Impressively, 97% of these employment opportunities, totaling 18,853 jobs, have been awarded to Tanzanian citizens, underscoring our dedication to prioritizing local talent and fostering economic empowerment. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR): Recognizing the importance of corporate responsibility, particularly towards communities surrounding mining projects, significant investments have been made. A total of 17.08 billion shillings has been allocated for various CSR projects benefiting local councils and towns adjacent to mining operations. These initiatives aim to improve livelihoods, infrastructure, and social services, thereby enhancing the well-being of surrounding communities. Conclusion: The Ministry remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting local participation and ensuring that mining activities contribute positively to the socio-economic development of our nation.
