Some great insights, Alan Furley. To view things through a different lens and not hire clones of ourselves (in my case, I'd be flabbergasted to find another me). When hiring, our lens had seen much homophobia and sexism at several offices, often from management too. My life/work partner (Alastair Hesketh-Jones PCC) who has 16+ years in the field has often been left out from social events simply because he wasn't one of the lads who drink Carling and talk Arsenal (Did you see that ludicrous display last night? The thing about Arsenal is, they always try to walk it in!). The beer-Friday and after-office pub-social events, which are almost ubiquitous in the field, are not inclusive. It seems to me that the wider perception of the industry is that Recruitment is a young lad's game, which, despite our best effort, meant our initial pool of applicants was gender disproportionate, tilting heavily on the male side. We hire for attitude, first and foremost. We apply the concept of neuro-tribes and try to hire an eclectic bunch to cater to a variety of candidates and clients. So far so good. In our next intake, we will possibly have to actively go hunting for a more diverse people, go where they hide, somehow, knock on doors instead of hoping more female / non-binary / trans applicants will answer our job ad. It must be on a merit basis, of course - the right attitude, a sales background etc - not just hiring à la United-Colours-Of-Benetton-tokenistic-ad fashion. At Lumina Talent Agency we can train/coach/support anyone into the field of recruitment and we are offering a safe environment for all, the safe environment we once wished for ourselves.
