I just read another article proposing civilianization as a solution for fixing policing's recruiting and retention problems. I disagree. This column is my explanation for how civilianizing more positions and destroying traditional pensions have ruined recruiting and retention, taking institutional knowledge with them. I'm not a cop and I'm not an expert. I'm just a writer who talks to people- a *lot* of people- and listens to what they say. Want to stop the exodus? Start taking care of your people as if they are your most precious asset. Want to civilianize everything that doesn't require a gun? Then make a traditional pension available for sworn officers at no more than twenty years, at a minimum of 50% pay, along with paid health coverage and care for injuries incurred along the way to that retirement, or keep reaping the whirlwind. #realreform #policing #accountability #lawenforcement #staffing #integrity #ethics #economics #saythequietpartoutloud

Just because you're exempt from garnishment doesn't mean they can't take your money. Sure, there are lots of people who might qualify for garnishment exemptions. Head of household, government benefits, and other protections might apply.  But in Florida, when they try to garnish your income or seize the money from your bank account, the burden is on YOU to prove an exemption. Even Social Security benefits are exposed in some circumstances.  And just because you prove your exemption once, doesn't mean they won't try again next year. And the year after that. And the year after that. Because Florida judgments last for 20 years, so does your hassle.
