🌐 "#GreenHydrogen for Sustainable Industrial Development | A Policy Toolkit for Developing Countrues",new publication by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) 📲 https://lnkd.in/dPgU56Uw 📗 https://lnkd.in/dSXDDthM ℹ A report underscoring green hydrogen’s potential as a catalyst for #sustainabledevelopment within developing countries that can contribute to economic growth, environmental sustainability and social progress. ❌ It challenges the prevailing narrative that green hydrogen is primarily a product for export from renewable-rich and industry-poor countries. ✅ Green #hydrogen production can create domestic value and jobs, and enhance international competitiveness through local manufacturing of related technologies and infrastructure, greening emission-intensive sectors and attracting foreign direct investment into domestic industries. 🎯 A central theme of the report is the promotion of a #justtransition approach to green hydrogen development. Emphasising the importance of policy coordination, it introduces a ‘clover approach’ comprising four key elements: 1️⃣ prioritising local use of green hydrogen 2️⃣ alignment with national objectives 3️⃣ starting with small- to medium-sized projects 4️⃣ the phased implementation of green hydrogen production and applications 👉 This approach ensures that green hydrogen production contributes to sustainable development, technological advancement and job creation in developing countries.

I'm conflicted about this IRENA report. On the one hand, I applaud the efforts to turn hydrogen into an engine for sustainable development. On the other hand, I feel this is yet another classic example of "Western Virtue Signaling" where developed countries tell developing countries how do do things. The main thing that bothers me is that this Virtue Signaling is done while at the same time the industry in the West is still massively polluting without any signs of slowing down without massive government intervention (read: subsidies). As an example. just ask the inhabitants of Dordrecht, the Netherlands, whose water is contaminated with PFAS and they are suffering from increased rates of cancer and birth defects. Let's go hydrogen but let's not forget that we all need to improve, not only developing countries. #hydrogen #hydrogeneconomy #greenhydrogen

Today we celebrate the International Day of Clean Energy. This provides us at Microelettrica Scientifica SpA with a great opportunity to reflect on the importance of a sustainable energy transition – and on our commitment to it. This day, established last year by the United Nations General Assembly, coincides with the anniversary of the birth of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009. So, it is a significant date for reaffirming our commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future. At Microelettrica, dedication to a greener world translates into concrete actions.
