These are likely the fastest overtakes ever performed by an autonomous vehicle. If it looks easy, remember: there’s no driver, no remote control, no stable GPS, and absolutely no staging—just two autonomous racing cars battling head-to-head for a million-dollar prize, at speeds between 250 and 290 kph in the racing capital of the world. 💥 To grasp the pressure in the pits, imagine knowing that a crash at these speeds could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars—a burden carried solely by the academic teams. Super proud of our Unimore Racing team from Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia, which pushed all the way to the final round in an all-Italian face-off against our friends from PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team at the Indy Autonomous Challenge. 🏅 Other Remarkable Achievements: - Over 3,000 km in autonomous mode without crashes, spins, or loss of control. - 1,000 laps completed between Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Kentucky Speedway. - Lidar-only localization that remains robust even without GNSS. - Precise opponent detection and tracking using redundant sensor fusion from multiple lidars, cameras, and radars—all on a single computing unit. - Safe detection and response to hardware issues, including steering failures, complete GPS-RTK and Lidar loss, fuel leaks, and battery undervoltage. We hope this inspires more confidence in the incredible Italian technological and academic ecosystem. With the right resources, these seeds can grow into something truly groundbreaking. 🇮🇹✨ https://lnkd.in/dk8vg9Vg

🤖 🚗💨 What an incredible experience attending the Indy Autonomous Challenge this week! I had the honor of being invited by the legendary team, Autonomous Tiger Racing (34🐯). I got an exclusive look at the phenomenal autonomous race cars and learning more about their autonomy architecture, and algorithms. This innovation is inspiring, reaching speeds of up to 200 MPH is truly breaking boundaries in autonomous vehicles! Also Thank to Indy Autonomous Challenge for organizing this at the Racing Capital Of the world. This was more than just a race; it's pushing the limits of what autonomous vehicles can achieve, setting new speed records and advancing the field in ways we couldn't have imagined a few years ago when I was exploring safety concerns of high performance autonomous maneuvers. You can learn more about safely pushing the maneuvering boundaries in my thesis "Safe motion control and planning for autonomous racing vehicles." https://lnkd.in/epv53VbY #IndyAutonomousChallenge #TigerRacing #AutonomousVehicles #AI #AutonomousDriving #Innovation #RacingTech #Tiger34

FEATURE: Latest developments from the Indy Autonomous Challenge. The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) is a race series that gathers global university teams to compete in challenges to advance technology that can speed the commercialization of fully autonomous vehicles and deployments of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), to increase safety and performance. The vehicles participating in the IAC are SAE level 4 autonomous, as they are capable of completing circuit laps and overtaking maneuvers without any human intervention. Graham Heeps, along with IAC insiders, in an exclusive feature first published in the April 2024 issue of ADAS & Autonomous Vehicle International, outline the new technologies emerging in autonomous racing and assess their safety, and performance.
