What makes a sustainable airport? Paul Toyne, Head of Sustainability Grimshaw and member of the British Aviation Group board, shares insights into the landside design and operations of airport design. Airports as a community asset, as enablers for low carbon air travel with circularity built in, and smart and resilient airports able to cope with future shocks and stresses. 'A sustainable airport needs to go even further...tackling whole life carbon emissions resulting from its design, construction and operation of its whole estate as well as addressing emissions associated with traveling to and from the airport.' 🛫🌱 SUSTAINABILITY IN AVIATION 🛫🌱 As a corporate sustainability professional, I've been reflecting on the evolving role of airports in our journey towards a more sustainable future. A recent article by Arup titled "What makes a sustainable airport?" caught my attention, highlighting five crucial questions that airports must address to truly become sustainable. The article emphasizes that sustainability in airports goes far beyond just protecting against climate risks. It's about reimagining every aspect of airport operations, from achieving net-zero emissions to integrating circular economy principles in design and construction. What struck me most was the holistic approach suggested: ✈ Achieving net-zero emissions through renewable energy adoption and energy efficiency measures ✈ Embracing circular economy principles in design and construction ✈Committing to 'green managed growth' to balance economic development with environmental protection ✈ Prioritising health and wellbeing for employees, communities, and users ✈ Expanding the airport's role in local communities beyond just employment As sustainability professionals, we often focus on individual aspects of environmental impact. However, this comprehensive view reminds us of the interconnectedness of sustainability challenges and solutions.I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of airports becoming hubs for green innovation and community development. 🚀 For instance, Luton Airport's focus on green aviation technology R&D showcases how airports can drive sustainable innovation and local economic growth simultaneously. As we continue to grapple with climate change and sustainable development, it's clear that airports have a unique opportunity to lead by example. ✈ By addressing these five key areas, airports can not only reduce their environmental impact but also strengthen their social license to operate and contribute positively to their communities. 🛫 Top Net Zero strategies from the world’s busiest airports. I came across this great roundup by Sustainability Magazine spotlighting the ambitious targets of some of the world’s largest and busiest airports as as they look to become among the world’s greenest. It underscores the critical and innovative steps airports are taking towards environmental stewardship, each a busy hub in its own right, championing the Net Zero movement. The top 9: 1. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands 2. Denver International Airport, USA 3. Delhi International Airport, India 4. London Heathrow Airport, UK 5. Los Angeles International Airport, USA 6. Frankfurt Airport, Germany 7. Dubai International Airport, UAE 8. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, USA 9. Istanbul International Airport, Turkey Each of these airports, from Schiphol with its fully electric vehicles to Istanbul's major afforestation projects, are not just reducing their carbon footprint; they are setting new standards in sustainability. At CIM, we are proud to either already be working with or be in discussions with a number of global airports to both enhance their operational efficiency and reduce their environmental impact. An interesting read on Toronto's future for the aviation sector and I look forward to seeing how they have progressed when I visit in a couple of weeks time. This article discusses their vision for a cleaner, greener downtown airport, and it's pretty inspiring. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is aiming to be a sustainability leader with innovative plans such as: - Transitioning to electric ground support equipment - Investing in renewable energy sources - Enhancing green spaces around the airport These steps are not just about reducing the carbon footprint but also about creating a better environment for passengers, employees, and the local community. It's a great example of how airports can balance growth with environmental responsibility. 🌟 Exciting News: Leveling Up with ACA level 5! Guess what's taxiing down the eco-friendly runway? Royal Schiphol Group has just earned its wings, becoming one of the first 10 globally to achieve Level 5 Airport Carbon Accreditation status! 🚀– straight after receiving the SBTi validation! 🚀 Net-zero for Scope 1 and 2 Our airport has reduced 90% of the emissions of our own operation (Scope 1 and 2) compared with 2010. This is a huge achievement that has been accomplishment thanks to the dedication of many (former) colleagues 💚. The remaining Scope 1 emissions are 11,500 tonnes CO2 – equal to the yearly emissions of 605 households in the Netherlands. Main measures were the shift to 100% Dutch wind electricity, phasing out gas and switch to electric buses at airside. 🌱 Next steps in decarbonization As we celebrate this milestone, we're not slowing down. Reaching net-zero is an important milestone to achieve zero emissions by 2030 and becoming energy positive by 2050. In parallel, we contribute to the decarbonization of our value chain, including aviation emissions. 🙌 Congratulations I would like to congratulate the airports that have achieved the same Level 5. Well done Michelle Samson, Koen Pouw, Gaby Mols, Sofie van Boxtel, Lena Wennberg, Claire Waghorn, Melina Santos Vanderlinder and colleagues! This is a journey that we have started together years ago and our efforts are paying off now. I’m pretty sure more airports will follow soon. Many thanks to ACI EUROPE, Emanuel Fleuti, Alexandre de Joybert for developing this newest level to track carbon reduction. 🤝Positive impact together Thank you for being a part of our sustainability journey! Together, let's make a positive impact on the planet and create a better tomorrow. 🌍💙 #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ACA #ACI #Airports #Leadership #Innovation #ClimateChange
