Through various interactions, I find immense rewards in my chosen pursuit in the profession of law. The past five months have brought me great gratitude for new opportunities, experiences, and relationships. On Tuesday, May 14th, I had a meeting with Mr. Victor Musabula, Managing Partner at Ventus Legal Practitioners. Particularly interested in their expertise in corporate and commercial law and dispute resolution, their commitment to "investing in relationships," extends beyond local clients to international alliances. Understanding the great importance of international relationships, adhering to diversification and an open mindset, I commend their efforts. Ventus' international alliances foster a high level of expertise through the exchange of ideas, promoting constant learning and adaptation to our modernizing world. My conversation with Mr. Musabua was profoundly enlightening, prompting me to reflect deeply on my professional aspirations and identify the unique path I wish to carve in the legal field. To say I had a lot to take away would be an understatement. Although days have passed, I am still reflecting and exploring critical questions. However, the clarity and direction I gained for our discussion have been incredibly motivating, reinforcing my passion for law and my commitment to excellence. To aspiring and seasoned legal professionals, I echo Mr. Musabula's wisdom: seize opportunities but discern wisely. Our time is finite, and prioritizing our pursuits with passion and intention is crucial. It is never too late to seize new opportunities, but remember exceptional credentials and achievements are vital, but evidence of practical application (through references and recommendations) is equally important. Ask yourself this, apart from your Curriculum Vitae application, who can be called to speak on your skills, and how will they attest to your skills? The Law Ninjas Next Gen GC Summit marks a year since I began my ‘year of yes,’ stepping out of my comfort zone to take on new challenges that have made me a little more visible in my professional life than I ever thought I’d be! Public speaking once terrified me. Not so much in a job interview, boardroom or to my business colleagues - no issues there. But speaking at a law conference in front of my peers… no thanks! All sorts of fears underpinned the lack of desire. But more than anything it was how disconnected I felt from my profession after experiencing and witnessing bullying and harmful work practices. I’d lost faith in our ‘leaders’ after seeing many responsible receive accolades for their contribution to the profession. I wasn’t going to join the same game. But something happened in late 2021 while I was getting to work making my own little corner of lawland reflect the change I wanted to see in the profession. I started to come across a growing number of lawyers I could identify with, and who sparked a desire to do more beyond the bounds of my own practice. Mel Storey’s instagram and Counsel podcast was giving law grads and early career lawyers hope and advice on navigating career choices, bullying and burnout, the kind I wish I’d had early on. Kate Sherburn was posting on linkedin about life in the law as a mum, something I wish I’d read as I was struggling with my return to work after my first child. And Perpetua Kish’s ‘The Kind Lawyers’, a group of practitioners driving positive change in the law and legal practice. So, when Rohan Bilimoria asked me to speak at Law Ninjas among a diverse array of brilliant lawyers, with much fear but no hesitation I said yes. I felt that if I could build confidence in speaking, I might also be able to contribute to changing the legal landscape beyond just my small team. Even if just as another voice in a growing chorus. Attending some brilliant in-house and legal ops conferences this past year has introduced me to so many lawyers who share my belief in the need for a more diverse and inclusive profession. It’s been healing, confidence-building, and I’ve gained some amazing friends. The opportunities that this first ‘yes’ opened up have helped build my speaking muscle. I don’t think my messages have made any significant change, but having grown the chorus by one more is enough for now, and I’m excited to see what the future holds. While you may be seen as one of the smartest people in the room, being overly assertive or dismissive can create barriers. It can make your colleagues hesitant to seek your advice, leading to missed opportunities to avoid legal issues. So, what's the solution? 1. Answer questions with a smile. 2. Position your legal advice as a partnership toward a common goal. 3. Be approachable, regardless of your colleagues’ knowledge level. Humility doesn’t mean downplaying your expertise.
