Including South Africa, 17 countries across Africa are expected to hold elections in 2024. 67% of South Africans are eligible to vote in this year’s election, but Afrobarometer surveys from 2021-2023 found that more than half of South Africans weren’t sure where their polling station was in the most recent election. If you want to learn more about why these elections matter for Africa and the world, read our research report on why 2024 is Africa’s ‘Ultimate’ Election Year. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/eixB5aMk

Africa's democracy this year is on trial with many countries headed for elections. It is unfortunate that less than 40% of Batswana have registered to vote in this year's general election, according to the voter registration roll just provided by the Independent Electoral Commission of Botswana. What can be the reason behind this? Most significant, though, is how can it be fixed before the upcoming elections? Join us tomorrow as we discuss the case of Botswana and Africa at large https://lnkd.in/dWpXpD_j

***SA Elections Update*** In the elections held on May 29, 2024, the African National Congress (ANC) party, which has ruled South Africa since apartheid ended in 1994, lost its parliamentary majority. Only 40.21% of the votes were cast for the ANC after almost all of the votes were tabulated. For the first time, in order to cross the 50% barrier needed to form government, the ANC will need to create a coalition government with other parties. With 21.78% of the vote, the Democratic Alliance (DA) secured the second position, trailed by the MK party (14.59%) and EFF (9.51%). The official results are anticipated to be released by the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) on Monday, June 3 at 6:00 p.m. local time (16:00 GMT) however there are talks of parties calling for a recount which may delay official results. #proteqtusgroup #elections2024 #southafrica #iec

With the European Elections coming up soon it's interesting to see the minimum age to stand as a candidate is different around the member states - ranging from 18-25. My thoughts are - ability and effective delivery for the common good are more important than age, with a caveat of practicality in relation to being able to perform the job (e.g. travel, safety, education etc). What are your thoughts? Most importantly, don't forget to vote if you have a vote! #eu #elections #vote #useyourvote #europeancommission #democracy #euinmyregion Northern and Western Regional Assembly
How young can you be to stand as a candidate in the European elections? Check out this map to see the minimum age required in order to campaign to become a member of the next European Parliament. The minimum age across most EU countries is as low as 18 years old, but it can be as high as 25 years old as observed in Greece and Italy. Rwanda's presidential elections? Paul Kagame was first elected president by Parliament in 2000. From 2003, 2010, and 2017, he was re-elected by universal suffrage with over 90% of the votes in his favor. What will be the political and security implications for the Great Lakes Region, and most importantly, for the DRC considering the strained diplomatic relationship that the two neighbouring states have shared for more than a should Pr Kagame be re-elected for another 5-year term in the upcoming presidential elections?

Elections in South Africa The elections are all but done and dusted. The ruling ANC losing control as a result of a well run campaign by the Zulu ethnic party of former president Zuma. The ANC are still in the majority but now have to form a coalition, or coalitions to remain in control. The practice of deliberately undersupplying ballot papers to the large towns probably shot them in the foot. African countries are generally governed on ethnic lines, but in South Africa because of the seventeen or so different tribes a certain number of non-ethnic votes are required to gain control. Only 58 % of the registered voters cast their vote, and it would appear that Zuma's party in gaining third spot have more or less used most of their available voting power. A very interesting result and it is generally believed that the ANC are on the way out.

In South Africa, the 2024 National and Provincial elections are eagerly awaited by many. A record number of political parties are already registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and voters will be spoiled for choice. Yet, a third (35%) of South Africans who are registered to vote say that there is NO political party that represents their views and there is much uncertainty about the future and apprehension about the possible outcomes of the elections. With President Cyril Ramaphosa expected to announce the election date during Thursday's Parliament opening ceremony, it is prudent to assess the current level of support for political parties before the onset of fully-fledged election campaigns. Questions linger regarding the potential impact of voter turnout on the perceived legitimacy of the elections. To address this, the IEC conducted another special voter registration weekend on 3 and 4 February. Political parties, politicians, and analysts keenly observe the additions to the voters' roll following this initiative. Presently, approximately 42.3 million South Africans aged 18 years or older are eligible to cast their vote. However, as of Monday, February 5, 2024, the IEC website indicates that only 27,173,114 South Africans are registered to vote. Thus, almost 64% of those eligible to vote are registered to vote, leaving about a third of adults who have chosen not to exercise their democratic right to vote by registering. #elections2024 #southafrica #politicalparties #voting
