Nigerian protesters' defiance of President Tinubu's request to stop demonstrations amidst the country's worst cost-of-living crisis in years underscores the depth of public discontent and mistrust in government. The persistence of protests despite the president's plea highlights the failure of his administration to address the economic woes and provide tangible solutions. As Nigerians continue to bear the brunt of soaring prices, unemployment, and poverty, the government's inability to alleviate their suffering erodes its legitimacy. The Nigerian government must obey the constitution, and live up to its provision about the prioritization of the citizens’ welfare and wellbeing as the fundamental duty of the government. Nigeria's economic turmoil is exacerbated by the profligacy of the political class and its people's quest for better living conditions is legitimate and doable if the government is more accountable. #EndBadGovernance #NigeriaProtests #CostOfLivingCrisis #EconomicHardship #Tinubu #GovernmentFailure #PublicDiscontent #EconomicTurmoil #Africa #ProtestContinues #Accountability #EndBadGovernance https://lnkd.in/eecPic4B

Police: Focusing on Constructive Engagement over Repression The recent arrest and subsequent transfer of 76 suspects, including a foreigner, for allegedly flying Russian flags during the nationwide hunger protest in Kano State have raised significant concerns about the approach being taken by the Nigeria Police Force. While the protests led to unfortunate incidents of violence and destruction, it is crucial to recognize that these actions were driven by deep-seated frustrations and legitimate grievances of the Nigerian people. The protests were not just about flying flags; they were a desperate cry for change in the face of widespread hardship. The core issues that fueled these protests—rising hunger, exorbitant fuel prices, and the lack of meaningful opportunities for the youth—remain unresolved. The energy and resources currently being directed towards prosecuting citizens for sedition would be better spent addressing the root causes of the unrest. Nationwide anti-government protests have persisted in #Nigeria since August 1. Chanting the slogan #EndBadGovernance, thousands have taken to the streets of Nigeria's major cities, including Abuja and Lagos, to pressure the government to address rising living costs, widespread food insecurity, shortages of electricity, and economic hardship. One year into President Tinubu's administration's election, Nigerians are demanding the reversal of the economic reforms implemented last year, held responsible for the ongoing crisis strangling the country. So far, Amnesty International and civil rights groups have reported at least 13 casualties during clashes between security forces and protestors, denouncing the excessive use of force by the police, arbitrary arrests, and widespread internet disruptions. While protests have calmed to some extent following President Tinubu's public statement on August 5 that a room for dialogue will be created having "heard loud and clear" the people's frustrations, protests are expected to continue until August 10. The intensity of protests in recent days has led to curfews being imposed in six northern states of Nigeria, including Kano, where more than 300 protesters have been arrested for looting and vandalism. Some protesters waved #Russian flags during demonstrations in the northern states, raising government concerns about Moscow's influence and support for protesters. Although the Russian embassy immediately denied any involvement with the protests, the presence of Russian flags confirms the spread of pro-Russian sentiments and the alienation from Western powers currently sweeping the region. The ongoing anti-government protests in Nigeria are not an isolated case in the region and echo a regional trend of widespread frustration and distrust of unaccountable governments, especially among the young population. In recent weeks, countries such as #Kenya, #Uganda, and #Ghana have also been rocked by waves of protests against bad government governance, civil unrest, and violent crackdowns by security forces. https://lnkd.in/dc-MedHk ₦ProtestinNigeria: The implications of Protesters in Northern Nigeria waving Russian flag in a sovereign nation like Nigeria Few days into the acclaimed nationwide protests in Nigeria has unraveled the underground agenda behind the intention of the organized campaign of protest. Although, the protest didn't gain much attention in the southern part of Nigeria, with some states not participating in it as they claimed that the timing of the protest is wrong and need to be patient with the Tinubu's government before evaluating its achievement scorecard and impacts of it reforms. While genuine protesters came out in Lagos, Abuja and other cities demonstrating peacefully and calling on the government to address their demands, which Bad governance, hunger, insecurity and inflation are occupying top spot on the list. The first day into the protest in northern part of Nigeria came with violence and destruction. As anarchist disguised as protesters were seen destroying public and privately owned properties across Kano, Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and other places in the North. The new trend across northern nigeria are the Russian flags been waved by protesters and calling for military take over. The ugly trend started in Kano but other northern state protesters are now waving Russian flags in numbers, forgetting that carrying another country's flag is treasonable and opposite of freedom. In my previous article, I concluded that the protest were schemed to undermine the present administration, but these actions from the protesters are proved that the organised campaign of protest against the Tinubu's Government has a sinister motive behind it that an average mindset cannot comprehend. Lastly, Government in Nigeria across 3tiers of governance, must devise sustainable and state based approach in addressing the hunger situation rather than giving out palliatives to only civil and public servants. #Nigeria #SolutiontoHunger #PeacefulProtest

The ongoing protest in Akure, Ondo State, is a testament to the growing frustration and anger among Nigerian youth towards the government's heavy-handed tactics and disregard for human rights. The police raid that sparked the protest is just one example of the systemic brutality and harassment that Nigerians face daily. It's time for the government to listen to the people's demands and implement meaningful reforms to address police brutality, corruption, and economic inequality. The continued suppression of peaceful protests will only exacerbate the crisis. #NigeriaGovt #BAT #Akure #OndoState #EndPoliceBrutality #AkureProtest #YouthDemandChange #ReformNow https://lnkd.in/dEPxWnW3

We urge the government and relevant state authorities to grant an audience to the protesters, provide a clear roadmap, and commit to addressing their concerns and challenges, as a matter of urgency. While urging the government to engage the protestors and protect their rights, we also denounce the reported acts of lawlessness and destruction to private and public properties by some protestors and caution Nigerians to express their grievances by all lawful means without causing damage and havoc to properties. #SolidarityForDemocracy Sida ECOWAS Commission Yiaga Africa https://bit.ly/3SFBMw3

STAND WITH MOZAMBIQUE🇲🇿 Recent videos and photos reveal the violent police response to ongoing protests in #Mozambique. Footage shows tear gas being deployed in residential areas and schoolyards, alongside the use of live ammunition against unarmed civilians. These protests have emerged from widespread discontent following the October 9 elections, the brutal killings of prominent lawyer Elvino Dias and opposition figure Paulo Guambe shortly thereafter, and subsequent police violence against protesters demanding justice. They also reflect deep-seated concerns about fundamental human rights, including health, employment, and rampant corruption. Reports indicate that since on October 11, the death toll has risen to 13, including a 14-year-old boy in Pebane, Zambezia Province, on October 31. Club of Mozambique UNICEF UNICEF Moçambique The deployment of tear gas in residential areas and a school, along with the firing of live rounds, places civilians—especially vulnerable groups—in unimaginable danger. The persistence of citizens in these protests, despite life-threatening risks, underscores the gravity of the issues at hand. #HumanRights #MozambiqueElections #Mozambique #StandWithMozambique #StandForJustice #SADC African Union SADC Secretariat United Nations RMDDH - Rede Moçambicana dos Defensores de Direitos Humanos Prof. Adriano Nuvunga Washington Katema Tanele Maseko
