Last week, the Victorian Heart Hospital welcomed Victorian Deputy Premier and Minister for Medical Research the Hon. Ben Carroll MP and his parliamentary colleagues, to tour the world-leading facilities. The Victorian Heart Hospital is an innovative partnership between Monash Health, Monash University, and the Victorian Government. Australia’s first dedicated cardiac hospital integrates clinical cardiology services, research, and education in one place to create a centre of excellence. Led by Professor Stephen Nicholls, the group visited the Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Catheterisation Labs including two hybrid labs – the largest and most advanced of their kind, Simulation Training Centre, Biomedical and Engineering Research Laboratories, Health Innovation Centre, Clinical Trials Centre and the Cardiac Emergency Department. “Through the Victorian Heart Hospital, Institute and new Health Innovation Centre we’re developing a translational ecosystem dedicated to improving health outcomes through innovation,” said Professor Stephen Nicholls, Director of the Victorian Heart Hospital and the Victorian Heart Institute. “We’re invested in building the profile of cardiovascular research, treatment and training so we can best meet the needs of our community, and all Victorians.” To learn more about the Victorian Heart Hospital, visit: https://lnkd.in/gUfbyu-x

Next Thursday (25 January) Karolien Baldewijns will defend the thesis ‘From guideline to practise: The organisation of multidisciplinary heart failure care in three European regions’ at 10.00h @ @MaastrichtUniversity. ➡️ Heart failure is a common, chronic and debilitating condition. To reduce the impact of heart failure, the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) has developed guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure. This thesis examines the application of these guidelines in three European regions; Maastricht (Netherlands), Noorderkempen (Belgium) and Aachen (Germany). More specifically, it focuses on how the guidelines related to multidisciplinary care and patient education are applied and used. The overall aim of this thesis is therefore to gain a better understanding of the current organisation and regulation of heart failure care in these three regions. First, the current processes of heart failure care were explored. After which, the local implementation of European guidelines regarding multidisciplinary care and patient education was examined. Next, the extent to which national training programmes for heart failure nurses correspond to the European training programme was examined. Finally, patient education as experienced by different professionals was mapped. Discharge from the hospital It took some time but the publication 'Help, I May Have to Go Home...' Leaving the Hospital Not Too Early and Not Too Late: Optimising the Discharge Process is online https://lnkd.in/e8N9hwnm Discharge from a hospital is a complex matter. Just as in hotels where check-out is the last part of the guest journey, discharge from hospital is crucial for image building, among other things. Improving the hospital discharge process contributes to a better patient experience and quality of life, word of mouth, efficiency and costs for the hospital. Together with (then) hotel school student Inge van Son, Onno Guicherit, surgical oncologist, medical director of the cancer center Haaglanden Medical Center, and myself, this research was conducted and this article was created with the result: Improving hospital discharge with check-out procedures from the hotel industry. Moreover, through this research, Inge became passionate about healthcare and subsequently went on to study medicine after hotel school. I am convinced that she will become a doctor who combines the best of both worlds: hospitableness and medical care. Onno is already a shining example of this.

FORWARD-LOOKING, HARVARD-STANFORD, MULTILINGUAL EXECUTIVE PHYSICIAN-SCIENTIST ENTREPRENEUR Translating Breakthrough Science and Real-World Evidence Into Actionable Big Data to Advance Global Human Health Equity
More #Cardiologists Failing the Boards, Why and How to Fix? Marilynn Larkin January 23, 2024 #MedscapeMedicalNews Recent evidence suggests that more cardiologists are failing to pass their boards. Pass rates declined from a high of 96% in 2018 to a low of 86% in 2021 and 2022. #COVID disruptions to training may be largely to blame, experts said. Among the 1061 candidates who took their first American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) cardiovascular (CV) disease exam in 2022, about 80 fellows failed who might have passed had they trained in 2016-2019, according to Anis John Kadado, MD, University of Massachusetts Medical School-Baystate Campus, Springfield, Massachusetts, and colleagues, writing in a viewpoint article published in the Journal of the American College of #Cardiology. "The purpose of board examinations is to test the knowledge, core concepts, and fundamental principles of trainees as they deliver patient care," Kadado told theheart.org/Medscape Cardiology. "The decline in CV board pass rates reflects a potential gap in training, which may translate to suboptimal patient care." Read more: https://lnkd.in/g88WGgjZ
