Are you bringing enough of you to work? I had a great day yesterday with my friend David Howell with a long walk and talk around the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield. Our conversation covered many topics, and connected many dots over a space of 6 hours and lunch, including the concept behind Humanixs. One topic that came up was the question of who are you? Yes, we got philosophical. 🤔 While there is a big question of authenticity at work, and if or how you can bring your whole self to work, what does that really mean? 👉🏻 are you being you (are you even comfortable being you?) 👉🏻 are you being who you think people expect you to be? 👉🏻 are you reflecting behaviours around you? It’s only now I believe I’m starting to discover who I think I am, but even then, I still hold back on ‘me’. I fear what people will say. In a team ask the following questions: 👥 what does the team need from me? 👥 what can I bring that complements the team? 👥 how can you be comfortable challenging the status quo (especially if it no longer works?) 👥 if bring more of myself, how does this impact my ability or energy to do my role? Thinking of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, we all have different backgrounds, and experiences, and need different things to be part of a team. I’m aware there are different versions of you depending on the environment. What do you need and want that will make you belong more? As a leader, what do you need from your team? What if they were who they are? These are not easy questions, and I don’t claim to have the answers. I fully endorse Simon Sinek's perspective. As corporate strategies have evolved, practices like Jack Welch's management style and layoffs have become so normalized, young people have grown up in a capitalist system where they watch their parents lose their jobs through no fault of their own. It's not a meritocracy. You worked for a company for 20 years. You did good work. "Sorry, nothing personal. It's just business. We missed our numbers." So they've watched it happen. They've watched the company not take care of their parents. And so they've been raised not to trust companies. And so they come in inherently cynical and inherently expecting that the company would happily use their job to help itself and then stupidly demand loyalty back. I don't blame them. The company sets the rules of the game. The people are just playing by the rules the company set, which is no loyalty. At the end of the day, great organizations that are well lead have no problem with young people leaving every year. So I don't think it's a new reality. I think it is a condition of a broken capitalism. We often use the start of a new financial year as a tool for reflection to celebrate our wins and learn from the challenges. This year is no different. The 2023/2024 financial year was one of great change for the Minus 1 business. Not only was it monumental in terms of the business ownership change that took place, but we also saw the implementation of a full Senior Leadership Team which had never existed before. Comprising of a GM of Operations, Head of People and Culture, Chief Financial Officer, Head of Administration, National Optimisation Manager and Head of Health, Safety and Environment, this implementation has set Minus 1 up to propel into a future of growth, longevity and continued success.
