Plans for a landmark teaching laboratories building have been submitted this week on behalf of our longstanding client, The University of Sheffield. The design, by Twelve Architects & Masterplanners and BVN Architecture, creates a ‘window to the teaching of science’. The building is located on the campus’ prominent Gold Route, which promotes active travel across the University campus. We provided planning, heritage and townscape consultancy advice to the University of Sheffield for the past 13 years, including advising upon and helping to shape its most prestigious schemes, most notably the Diamond Building and the recently completed Wave Building. “This will be a truly world-class teaching building,” said Montagu Evans Partner Julian Stephenson. “It will consolidate the Faculty of Science into one building, providing state-of-the-art facilities including two ‘super-labs’ for the teaching of up to 600 students, a medical teaching unit, flexible study spaces and a pocket park. On completion in 2027, the building will be a further step forward for the University in achieving their ambitious vision of creating a sustainable, low carbon estate, and will significantly improve the teaching experience for undergraduate science students”. With Julian Stephenson, Rachel Mushet, and Dylan Chaplin on Planning and David Taylor, Ben Tosland and Benjamin Clark on Heritage, Townscape and Visual Impact. #MEPlanning #MEHEAT #HigherEducation #UniversityOfSheffield

Great learning opportunity
The deadline to apply for the Summer School Planning and Design for the Just City, organised by the Centre for the Just City of Delft University of Technology, has been extended until 8 February, 2024! Associate Professor of Spatial Planning and Strategy Roberto Rocco plans, designs and oversees the organisation of the Just City Summer School. With his expertise in governance of #urbansustainability transitions, Roberto designed the Summer School to combine spatial planning, urban design and environmental technology to tackle issues of #spatialjustice, sustainability, #climateadaptation and water management. “I seek to uncover pathways to sustainable urban development that prioritise the needs of all citizens, address spatial injustices, and promote the harmonious coexistence of nature and society in an era marked by rapid urbanisation, democratic deficit and environmental challenges.” This summer school is geared towards undergraduates, but recent graduates, PhDs, and professionals are also welcome to apply! Are you interested in learning about spatial justice together with students from all over the world? HIGHER EDUCATION is in the forefront of my mind today. Last week, I created a post about Higher Ed, mainly noting that I am teaching a class, but also that Lerch Bates Inc. delivers consulting services in that space. I started thinking, and curiosity got the best of me...I wanted to see what types of Higher Ed projects we've been involved with as a team throughout the nation. Not only did I find all types of scopes within all of our disciplines, I also found history, architecture, honor & people's choice awards, merit awards, BECx, innovation, and diversity. Do you recognize any of these buildings or campuses (some of my new favs)? #buildingenclosureconsulting #becx #verticaltransportation #facadeaccess #pedestriancirculation #logistics #buildingenvelopeconsulting #repairandmodernization #forensics

Mace has been awarded an £88 million contract for the extension and refurbishment of a Grade II listed teaching laboratory at the University of East Anglia (UEA). The project will modernize the historic building, providing state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces while preserving its architectural significance. Mark Reynolds, CEO of Mace, said, "We are committed to delivering a high-quality refurbishment that respects the heritage of the building and creates a modern learning environment." Professor David Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of UEA, added, "This refurbishment will preserve an important part of our heritage and provide cutting-edge facilities for education and research." Construction will begin later this year, with completion expected by 2026. The project will be phased to minimize disruption to academic activities. AUDE last addressed the issue of legacy buildings in a 2008 report, so it is high time that we return to a subject that matters more and more. In managing our carbon obligations and in operating within tight financial constraints, the estates teams of today need more flexibility and creativity than ever before in getting the most possible from every building and every campus space. With capital spend in the overall Higher Education estate a clear £1bn down on its pre-pandemic levels, every university is looking to get the most from its older buildings. These can be the places that give each campus its unique character, and some will hold the historical story of the university whether the institution has Victorian or even medieval roots. But increasingly when we think of ‘legacy’ we may mean buildings of the immediate post-war period. Whatever the era we can be faced with a patchwork campus of buildings created using all kinds of technologies, including largely obsolete ones that don’t match up easily with the expectations of our staff and students today. As we focus our efforts towards 21st century pedagogies, digitisation, and the decarbonisation of our campuses, we can face legacy obstacles even in the shape of buildings of which we are immensely proud. Buildings of the last 30 years are now starting to be listed: this picture is a moving one. In the new AUDE Legacy Buildings Guide, published today, we look at these and related issues. We are grateful to Arup (including Andy Sheppard and Rick Lee) for their support in creating the new guide, as well as to the many AUDE members that had a helpful hand in its development. We hope you’ll be able to join our online session on 6 November at 10am which will introduce you to the document and help you to start thinking about the value it will add to your planning. “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” - Winston Churchill, 1943 The link between intentional design and society is linear – because while architecture shapes our students, it’s the students that shape our future. And campuses worldwide are sparing no detail, specifying materials for both functionality and aesthetics. These elements breathe life into universities, building community and encouraging academic success. Don’t neglect the details. Reminder - Two Important Deadlines! Don’t forget the JAE has issued two open calls for participation. Call for JAE Fellows (2024-2025) Deadline: February 1st (TODAY but the application is quite short) The JAE and ACSA recognize the critical need to support the scholarship of architectural educators and researchers who face and continue to encounter systemic and structural obstacles, including racism, within academia and beyond. As a step toward this commitment, we have established one-year Fellowships and online publication commitments for cohorts of four architectural educators, designers, and researchers per year who self-identify as Black, Native/Indigenous, and/or as members of groups that are and have been historically and systemically marginalized and excluded, and whose academic labor is precarious, including adjunct, lecturer, and other non-tenure track faculty. Learn More: https://lnkd.in/eR2GDXt5 Call for JAE Editorial Board Members (2024-2024) Deadline: March 1st The Journal of Architectural Education invites applications for at-large positions on the Editorial Board. Founded in 1947, JAE is published twice a year by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). For over 75 years, it has been the primary venue for peer-reviewed research and commentary on architectural education. Architectural education has evolved, as has the nature of architectural scholarship. With this call, the JAE seeks to continue reflecting on these important shifts by building an editorial board that encompasses the full breadth of practices in architectural education, research, and scholarship. Schools (K-12) are arguably the most important building type we create. They represent not only institutions for learning, but they help to define the communities they serve. It's important to build them right. If you're in the Portland, Oregon area, this in-person learning opportunity is not to be missed. #SchoolConstruction #ResilientDesign #Schools
I am very excited to announce an upcoming symposium on September 27th at the historic McMenamins Kennedy School. This one day event is focused on K-12 school construction in Oregon. We all want healthy and safe buildings for our students and educators, and that starts early in the planning process. Join us for a day of connecting and learning about sustainable and resilient school design! Inspiring Minds: Creating Resilient & Responsible Educational Spaces https://lnkd.in/gB7UrRnH
