Patrons still travel to the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. Quality still matters and the landmark still stands, but a total iverhaul of the cinema experience is long overdue. A central control room eliminates the need for “old tyme” projection booths. More effective and efficient use of space could be used to “sound buffer” multiplex spaces and allow for a premium experience, increasing attendance over staying home for a “better” cinematic experience. I remember seeing a Star Wars Episode II or III premier at Universal City Walk (before DCP compliancy) where an MPEG-2 server was feeding a 60 foot wide screen this feature theatrical release below SMPTE specification for illumination/ reflectivity (4 to 6 footcandles where is should be 12 to 16 footcandles.) The resolution of MPEG-2 spread across 60 feet also left much to be desired ( 🤮 ) but if the multiplex pimplefaced management can thread the needle for promotion with no accountability then the patrons would be better served with a Costco TV and a 2.1 soundbar at home for the whole family.
