The Cooper Union Foundation Building is a historic building in New York City that was designed by architect James Renwick Jr. and completed in 1859. The building is notable for its inclusion of an elevator shaft, even though elevators were not invented until the 1860s. The elevator shaft was included in the design of the building because Renwick believed that elevators would eventually be invented, and he wanted to be prepared for the future. The shaft was never used for an elevator, but it is now a popular tourist attraction. The Cooper Union Foundation Building is a testament to Renwick's foresight and vision. He was able to see the future and plan for it, even when others could not. Sunlit Shelter: A House Above the Car Park In Leeds, atop the urban sprawl, A house emerges, standing tall, A primitive hut, as if in a dream, With a roof to shelter, or so it may seem. Above the car park, open to the sky, Where elements dance as time flies by, A testament to Laugier's vision grand, In architectural history, where it all began. But this house, it holds a secret deep, A nod to the past, where shadows creep, For on this site, where darkness fell, Once stood the prison of a Yorkshire tale. Where Peter Sutcliffe, the Ripper grim, Was first confined, his deeds so grim, But now, above the car park's din, Stands a house with a new story to begin. For it embraces the sun's warm light, With solar cells gleaming, shining bright, Harnessing energy, a beacon of hope, In a world where sustainability we must cope. There are some challenging - and valid - points in this opinion piece, especially when you consider how Charleston was built, but there has to be a middle ground. Preservation guidelines are often a blunt tool, not well coordinated with zoning practices or intent. Historic districts have been overused in places where form-base zoning or neighborhood conservation districts would have been a better solution to achieve the end result. Adaptive use strategies need to be encouraged and innovation in grant programs to accommodate building upgrades, such as the installation of sprinkler systems, as valid as subsidies for facade improvements, to maintain the character of a neighborhood or business district.

This looks like a really interesting event! I'm so curious about the role interior lighting plays in bird collisions! For buildings with 24 hour occupancy where we can't turn the lights off at night, what can we do to help? During the day, should we be increasing the light at the perimeter of buildings to reduce reflections? #birdsafebuildings #lightingdesign #sustainability

The Mississippi River has shaped the life and culture of St. Louis since its founding. As the river was transformed for barge traffic by a highly managed system of locks and dams, many St. Louisans lost their connection to the water that is so vital to the region. Derek Hoeferlin, chair of landscape architecture and author of "Way Beyond Bigness: The Need for a Watershed Architecture," studies rivers and how their transformation affects local perceptions and potential responses to climate change. A born-and-raised St. Louisan, he's also rebuilding the lost connection to the river by bringing students to explore a miles-long, barge-free stretch of the Mississippi just north of downtown. "Once you get people into the canoe, the mindset changes... there's something different happening out here." "The next hundred years needs to be far less about gray infrastructure — literally concrete and steel — and much more about nature-based solutions... to create more space to let the river do what it wants to do naturally." https://lnkd.in/gZ3rw2XB
