💙 "When we are collecting seeds, we are creating life." Crispim, one of our seed collection partners in the state of Bahia, shares the experience of working with seed collection. With an incredible story and a passion, Crispim exemplifies the importance of partnering with local communities in restoration projects. This theme, which was also addressed in our recent webinar, is essential for us at MORFO. Partnerships with local participants allow us to promote local labor, which is crucial for: 🔬 Soil analysis: Conducting diagnostics before planting and long-term monitoring after planting. 🌱 Soil preparation: Ensuring the soil is ready for planting. 📍 Local seed collection: Ensuring genetic diversity and environmental adaptation. 🪴 Nursery management: Conducting traditional manual planting efficiently. URBAN AGRICULTURE IN LISBON - At the end of 2023, the 21 vegetable gardens and 3 farms of Lisbon occupied 16.4 hectares of the city area (10,005 hectares). In addition to these municipal spaces, there are small vegetable gardens in 70 public schools, with educational and community supply purposes, and in some cases with hydroponic cultivation. The 21 municipal vegetable gardens in operation (9.7 hectares) are divided into 850 plots for cultivation, which are allocated by public tender. Agriculture always existed in cities and in Lisbon there are reports of the existence of vegetable gardens and farms since Roman times. Discover more https://lnkd.in/dZmz5Q52

Trifolium repens (from Latin repens, meaning crawling), the white clover, is a herbaceous perennial plant in the bean family Fabaceae (otherwise known as Leguminosae). It is native to Europe, including the British Isles, and central Asia and is one of the most widely cultivated types of clover. It has been widely introduced worldwide as a forage crop, and is now also common in most grassy areas (lawns and gardens) of North America, Australia and New Zealand. The species includes varieties often classed as small, intermediate and large, according to height, which reflects petiole length. The term 'white clover' is applied to the species in general, 'Dutch clover' is often applied to intermediate varieties (but sometimes to smaller varieties), and 'ladino clover' is applied to large varieties.

Our country is rich in indigenous varieties of vegetables, and one of the goals of my research is to promote our natural wealth worldwide. In addition to well-known vegetable crops such as peppers and onions, Bosnia and Herzegovina has been cultivating a wide range of cabbage (kale) varieties for generations, making us one of the richest sources of this plant in the world. My work focuses on the role of kale in phytoremediation of soil contaminated with heavy metals, such as cadmium. This approach not only provides an efficient way to select the healthiest cabbage varieties but also contributes to the preservation of soil and the environment, as these plants can purify the soil from heavy metals, and BiH has precisely such a variety of cabbage. https://lnkd.in/ddyfXRyr

A new paintbrush plant Southern Africa is home to plant species which have been used as ornamental plants. Such an example is the genus Haemanthus from the Amaryllidaceae family. Its common name is paintbrush or poederkwast plant. The plant yields one flowering stalk, with an inflorescence consisting of numerous tepals with stamens and pistils. Haemanthus bulbs were among the first botanical specimens to be collected in South Africa and transported to Europe by Dutch colonists. In 1762 the genus has been described by Carl Linnaeus. H. coccineus (with red flower, bloedblom) and H. sanguineus were being cultivated in the Netherlands. H. albiflos is a plant massively grown in parks and gardens in Botswana, and occasionally also in households in Europe, where private growers have inherited the plants from their grandmothers. Recently a new Haemanthus cultivar has been obtained, a hybrid from H. albiflos (with white blooms), H. deformis ( dwarf type) and H. coccineus (red blooms). One pair of thick leathery leaves sprouts form the bulb, and once a year a flowering stalk is formed in autumn. It is such an exotic plant! #haemanthus #paintbrushplant #poederkwastplant #tetraartbreeding #botanicalillustration

Simple & effective tree revitalization in cities. Helping Nature recover & get ready for hard season ahead. The Herbafertil patented blend of organic matter helps the tree to get all nutrients for a strong start into the season. It is important we recognize these steps that seem trivial yet contribute to a thoughtout thriving greenery system in our cities. As they deliver ecosystem services like: 1. protection against overheating 2. air quality & humidity 3. biodiversity 4. water retention among others + when paired with a SUDS the impact would multiply ( sustainable urban drainage system) Ps: Do you have trees in your area that need help? #greencities #urbanism #ecology

💚 Tree revitalization! 👏 Well done to the young and professional team from the public utility company 𝐕𝐎𝐊𝐀 𝐒𝐍𝐀𝐆𝐀, 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐋𝐣𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐣𝐚𝐧𝐚, 𝐒𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐚! They decided to revitalize the row of weakly growing Turkish hazels (Corylus colurna) trees. Four HERBAFERTIL® bags were applied in the root network around each tree. 👉 We will visit them again in late summer. By then, a 𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥 (𝐢.𝐞. 𝐌𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐞®) , weighing 6-7 kg net will grow at each site where HERBAFERTIL® bag is applicated yesterday. This will help root to develop properly in width and depth, which guarantees the tree's resistance to bending and wind damage, as well to get green healthy leaves and vitality back. Short video on how it was done yesterday! 👇 #urbanforestry #arboriculture #horticulture #climatechange #sustainability #trees

Kratom belongs to the Rubiaceae family, just like coffee plants. Morphologically, kratom is a tree with a straight trunk and its bark is ash brown in color (Secretariat, 2017). The color of the leaf veins and midrib serves as one of the distinguishing parameters, as there are two types of colors: green and reddish-brown (Shellard and Lees, 1965). Kratom thrives in areas near river streams with alluvial soil rich in organic matter. Although kratom is not an aquatic plant, it has the ability to survive in flooded conditions. In Kapuas Hulu, kratom is commonly grown by local communities in their yards; however, large-scale cultivation is carried out in plantations and land near rivers.

Attention owners of the Plants of the Forest Floor Book. It has come to our attention that there are some errors in the book and I recommend you annotate your copies to avoid confusion. Feel free to shoot me a message if you notice any other errors. Page 24, Drymaria cordata : the text states it is a weed in many countries of the world but fails to mention that this includes Australia. It is regarded as introduced in Australia. Page 83, Cordyline petiolaris is illustrated with pedicellate fruit (fruit with individual stalks). In reality the fruit are sessile (without stalks or stalks that are so short as to not be visible) and the fruit are typically crowded on the inflorescence branches. The illustration as is could lead to people mistaking Cordyline manners-suttoniae for this species which is actually a pet hate of mine 😅 so sorry for this oversight. Also worth noting is that on page 18, whilst it does note that the drawings are not to scale there, that note could be overlooked. Of the species illustrated Hydrocotyle pedicellosa is the most out of scale often having relatively large leaves in comparison to the others. This is more clear when you look at the dedicated page for that particular species on page 22.
