Mid-performance mishaps in an orchestra: a powerful lesson for professionals across various industries. When disaster strikes, the ability to remain composed and adapt is crucial. String snap, reeds break and keys fail. In an orchestra, the broken instrument is passed down the line, for the end player to fix. The players, hand over their instruments so that those at the front carry on. Then, lower down the line, quietly and calmly the strings are restrung or reed replaced. Here is a dramatic moment where principal oboe of the LSO Olivier, breaks his reed mid solo when trying to remove a bubble of water! So he grabs his colleague's. What isn't captured is Rosie cleaning Olivier's instrument, fitting a new reed and handing it back to him, ready for their next entries! Just as musicians discreetly exchange and repair instruments, companies must have contingency plans and cross-trained staff ready to step in and keep the show going.
