For patients to follow their plan of care once they leave a Mosaic facility, all the pieces must be in place such as food, housing and transportation. When one of these elements of self-care is missing, it places the patient’s outlook for better health in jeopardy. In this episode of Mosaic’s All the Pieces podcast, Chief Quality Officer and Hospitalist Karan Mohan, MD, speaks with Traci Spillman, community network program manager, about The AIM Network and, specifically, findhelp.org, a website dedicated to helping people find the resources they need. “You’re going to drive an hour just to have your baby in Hillsdale? Isn’t there a hospital five minutes from your house?” I got these questions frequently throughout my pregnancy, and the answer to both was “Yes.” In a recent episode of our podcast, Rural Heath Rising, we get into the details of why I chose Hillsdale and how the team saved my life when I suffered a severe postpartum hemorrhage. The way I see it, I survived because of three things: a highly-skilled care team, investment in state-of-the-art technology and access to maternity care. My care team—Dr. O’Dell, Tressa, Paige and Sam—didn’t miss a beat and are responsible for saving my life. Because our rural hospital invests in state-of-the-art technology like the Jada System from Organon, the bleeding was finally controlled after other efforts failed. But that rural hospital five minutes from my house? Its labor and delivery unit closed in September. My son was born in October. If I didn’t have the resources to travel outside of my community and tried to deliver at home instead, I wouldn’t be here today. This experience has made the issue of lack of maternity care in rural communities all the more real for me. More than half of rural counties in the US have no local access to maternity care and maternal mortality rates in rural communities are nearly double what they are in urban areas. It’s 2024. Not 1824. We have to decide as a country whether we care about the women in rural America who are dying in childbirth and if we’re willing to do what it takes to rectify that. I highly recommend reading Harold Miller’s report on the rural maternity care crisis to get a clear understanding of just what we’re facing and how it can be fixed: https://lnkd.in/g2xNHdZp #thepowerofrural #ruralhealth #ruralhealthcare #maternitycare #ruralamerica #healthequity

"These hospital systems have executives making seven figures a year deciding to close an OB unit that might be losing five to low six figures a year." The lack of maternity care in rural communities means more women dying in childbirth, more babies not surviving delivery, and--for those that do survive--more long-term health complications. According to the National Rural Health Association's latest white paper, "Maternal health in rural America," more than HALF of rural counties no longer have access to OB services and infant mortality rates DOUBLE in counties that have lost OB services. Something is WRONG with this picture. Like the specific scenario in Idaho that Senator Ron Wyden described at yesterday's Senate Finance Committee hearing on Rural Healthcare, many OB unit closures occur within just a few years of a large system's acquisition of a rural hospital. https://lnkd.in/gMAQhacR It's time we start fixing the reimbursement problems that drive these closures and do everything we can to help rural hospitals maintain local control so that the decisions about closing rural OB units aren't being made by people who are in no way impacted by those closures. #powerofrural #ruralhealthcare #maternitycare
