Natural Resources Canada | Ressources naturelles Canada proposes to accelerate #criticalminerals #mining by expediting the mine permitting process from 12-15 years to potentially 5 years. Part of the proposal includes reducing the time to approve mining permits by better funding the regulatory agency to expedite paperwork backlogs, while running permitting and environmental assessment processes at the same time. To cover part of the permitting costs, the Government of Canada is proposing to establish investment tax credits to cover for a significant portion of the capital associated with the construction of new mine operations. Funds are also ready to be made available for infrastructure like transmission lines and roads that will help accelerate the development of new mine operations. https://lnkd.in/eG7umhqE

Global Vice President, Metallurgy and Consulting at SGS | Precious & Base Metals | Critical Minerals | Battery Supply Chain
Minister Jonathan Wilkinson comments on Canadian government approach to accelerating development of #criticalminerals projects. "(We're) looking at how do we optimise the regulatory and permanent processes so you can take what is a 12 to 15-year process and bring it down to maybe five," "There are ways you can just do things smarter ... There's no reason that you can't do permitting of different things between federal and provincial governments at the same time, instead of doing them sequentially." I can say that based of engagement with federal policy stakeholders in Ottawa in the last 12-18 months they are listening to industry. Slow pace of permitting was one of top issues mentioned with the high quality standards needed to be maintained. Glad this is being recognized and communicated and await to see the action plan. Permitting is not only federal but also need to work with the provinces to have real impact. Ian London Marilyn Spink, P.Eng., CSR-P, GCB.D, FCAE Bryan N. It's great to see the Minister taking a proactive stance towards accelerating critical mineral #mining in Canada. #ProudlyCanadian In light of yesterday's leach pad slide and operational failure in Turkey, prioritizing sustainable mining practices is even more pivotal for ensuring the long-term viability of our mining endeavors. By minimizing our environmental impact, implementing responsible waste management, and ensuring worker safety, we will lay the groundwork for sustainable growth. Importantly, engaging and collaborating with our indigenous communities and stakeholders is fundamental to responsible resource extraction. Canada is a leader in the mining sector and boasts a wealth of expertise in mining research and innovation. Investing in technologies for sustainable mineral extraction, recycling, and refining, we bolster our competitiveness while minimizing environmental impacts. Several startups are already taking the opportunity to impact the sector. Proudly our #Canadian skilled workforce is #indispensable for the #success of the #mining industry. Supporting Canada's mining sector while upholding sustainability for all stakeholders is paramount. Through a comprehensive approach that emphasizes environmental stewardship, community engagement, innovation, and responsible supply chain practices, we can reinforce our position as a global mining leader while driving economic growth and societal well-being. Let's continue collaborating towards a sustainable and prosperous future for Canada's mining industry. We and our future generations can benefit from it greatly. #Mining #Sustainability #Canada #ResourceDevelopment https://lnkd.in/ern8v8Gm

An article shared last week outlines how Canada aims to reduce the development timeline for critical mineral mines from 12-15 years to approximately 5 years. This effort, focusing in part on minerals essential for manufacturing electric vehicles, highlights the government's commitment to electrifying the transportation sector, making Canada an attractive industry partner on the global stage. This effort includes substantial investments in infrastructure and incentives for mining and mineral processing projects, enhancing Canada's ability to offer energy resources at affordable prices and strengthening its position in the lithium and broader critical mineral markets. Canada plans to boost its energy security by slashing the time it takes to develop new critical mineral mines by nearly a decade with improved permitting processes, energy minister Jonathan Wilkinson told Reuters on Tuesday. Ottawa is focused on six critical minerals key to making electric vehicles and wind turbines: lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, copper, and so-called rare earth elements. Canada plans to reduce the time to approve mining permits by better funding the regulatory agency to get rid of paperwork backlogs and running permitting and environmental assessment processes at the same time. Wilkinson said streamlining permitting and environmental assessments would not lead to corner-cutting and that the mining and processing of critical minerals was currently too dominated by China. #mining #canada #energy streamlining #politics https://lnkd.in/giTKhgee

Exciting Developments in Australia's Mining and Construction Industry! In a recent article written by our consultant, Doug Hodge, it's evident that Australia is at the forefront of the global push towards net zero emissions by 2050. While Queensland faced a 10.8% dip in private capital expenditure from June to September 2023, the rest of Australia is booming, with over $50 billion in investment in 100 prospective mining projects. Queensland is actively transitioning from coal to critical minerals, with initiatives like the Copperstring Project and a state-of-the-art processing facility near Townsville; however, challenges like a 40% royalty tax loom are impacting capital growth. Let's stay tuned for how the industry evolves and if government initiatives will attract the necessary investments for sustainable growth! Canada’s Ambitious Plan to Accelerate Critical Mineral Mining In an effort to fortify its energy security, Canada is making strides to significantly reduce the development time for new critical mineral mines. Energy Minister Jonathan Wilkinson announced plans to streamline permitting processes, potentially cutting the timeline from 12-15 years to just about five. This move targets six essential minerals for electric vehicles and wind turbines: lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, copper, and rare earth elements. Acknowledging the current dominance of China in the mining and processing of these critical resources, Canada aims for a smarter, integrated approach between federal and provincial governments to speed up approvals. Enhancements include better funding for regulatory agencies and simultaneous permitting and environmental assessments. Despite these advances, Canada acknowledges the necessity of importing cobalt due to limited domestic resources. To support the initiative, investment tax credits and funds for essential infrastructure are being introduced, alongside billions in investments for battery factory projects with global companies like Northvolt and Volkswagen. Moreover, a loan guarantee program will assist indigenous communities in participating as equity investors in mining projects. This strategic move not only addresses energy security but also supports the global transition to cleaner energy, highlighting Canada’s commitment to environmental sustainability and economic growth. Corporate energy and mining attorney specializing in the transactional and regulatory landscape of the energy transition
To help fuel domestic #mining and #mineralprocessing for the #energytransition, it would be great to see action on the Interagency Working Group's recommendation to develop something like the Western Solar Plan for mining on federal lands. Working with various stakeholders, BLM and USFS should put together a plan identifying "priority areas" where proposed projects would be subject to a streamlined #permitting process because there is high development potential with minimal conflicts with #localcommunities, #wildlife, and #plants. Proactive conflict identification and mitigation can help us ramp up production to meet the demands of the #energytransition while not sacrificing #tribal and local #communityengagement and #biodiversityconservation. Great background and additional recommendations contained in the report: https://lnkd.in/eYbMBfq2 "Conflicts over mining and ancillary uses are more likely to arise when mineral-rich areas also contain other highly valuable resources. The IWG believes that much more can be done to identify, avoid, minimize, and mitigate environmental impacts and development conflicts by better integrating land management planning and mineral exploration and development efforts. The IWG encourages the BLM and USFS to identify areas possessing high critical mineral resource development potential and where mineral development is less likely to result in unacceptable impacts to known competing resources. This effort can be modeled after programmatic planning efforts identifying priority areas for wind and solar development, provided additional data is collected in the location of potential mineral resources."
