I can’t get past this quote: “Diesel exhaust…disproportionately affects Black, Latino, Indigenous, and low-income communities.” As a Latino, diesel exhaust affects me more than my non-brown-skinned colleagues? Hell no. Don’t even go there. If we want electric buses to take a foothold, focus on the benefits and systemic advantages they offer over alternatives. But don’t you dare pretend you’re somehow “saving” people of color with this misplaced saviorism. If you want to help poor, colored people, go build them a school. Don’t replace one thing with a model number you like more and call it salvation. I’m doing just fine, thank you very much. Go save yourself. #climate #climatechange

The US’ first all-electric school bus fleet is also a grid asset: The Oakland Unified School District has become the first major school district in the US to transition to an all-electric fleet of buses. In partnership with electric vehicle company Zum, the district has deployed 74 plug-in school buses, replacing all of the fossil fuel-powered models it used previously. Aside from reducing local air pollution, the zero-emission buses are equipped with vehicle-to-the-grid technology, meaning their batteries send energy back into the grid when not in use. https://lnkd.in/dkpeDDiU

Did you know that each school day, more than 20 million children in the United States ride in nearly half a million diesel-burning school buses, breathing in toxic exhaust that harms their health and cognitive development? 🔋 Take a look at the NEW Policy Playbook from Alliance for Transportation Electrification (ATE) and WRI Electric School Bus Initiative WRI as it's a game-changer for state lawmakers, regulators, agencies, utilities, and advocates to equitably electrify their state’s school bus fleet. https://lnkd.in/gpJpy5mV Zūm #electrification #students #equity #sustainability

Electrifying school buses is major step in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. But eliminating tailpipe emissions also removes the particulate pollution that is harming our children's health. Plus, with federal rebates for upfront purchase and lower ongoing operations costs, electric school buses will save school districts money to go towards other resources for their core mission to education our kids. Newton County School System didn't quite make the cut on the most recent grant cycle for the EPA's #CleanSchoolBus Rebate Program, but it is super-critical that we continue to apply in every cycle. https://lnkd.in/eu2jMbBm

As a new school year begins, the need to transition to electric school buses in Canada becomes more evident. With diesel emissions posing significant health risks to children, it's noteworthy that less than 1% of our school bus fleet has been electrified. This calls for decisive government intervention and substantial funding to expedite the transition as the Government of Canada has not set a specific target to transition combustion school buses to zero-emission vehicles. There is a role for all provinces to step into their education departments and declare that school buses are a source of emissions and not just polluting, but health-damaging emissions. Every child deserves a safe, clean, and healthy ride to school. When a child rides a propane-fueled bus to school, they arrive healthier, safer, and better prepared to learn. Diesel school buses are not good for our kids or our communities. Though electric buses run clean and quiet, their extremely high costs place big burdens on school district budgets. That can mean less money for what matters most: educating children. Propane buses offer many of the same environmental benefits of electric — but at a fraction of the cost. They travel farther, refuel more quickly, and even have a smaller carbon footprint. That means a clean, quiet ride for every child (and huge cost savings for school districts). #CleanCitiesGeorgia Read more: https://lnkd.in/eBz8CkwE

#ICYMI: Experts say inaction from government and industry around transitioning school buses to zero-emission vehicles is putting kids in danger. Yet despite this reality, today there are only about 1,300 electric school buses on the road in Canada out of a fleet of over 50,000 #ElectricVehicles #ElectricBuses #SchoolBuses #BackToSchool https://lnkd.in/exjrgJai

🚌 A recent report from the World Resources Institute highlights that the transition to emissions-free school buses skyrocketed in 2023 across the nation, rising from 598 to 1,285 in June. 🌱 This surge in #electric school buses, part of the federal Clean School Bus Program, aims to promote cleaner air by reducing #airpollution and greenhouse gas #emissions that will ultimately benefit students and the environment. 📍So far, California leads the charge with over 2,000 committed ESBs, followed by Maryland and New Jersey. Can’t wait to see how the trend continues to grow over time!
