Mott MacDonald’s Post

The energy market in Sabah, Malaysia, faces significant challenges including high levels of outages, a heavy reliance on fossil fuels, electricity tariff subsidies, and inadequate infrastructure. In response, the state government has launched the Sabah Energy Roadmap and Master Plan 2040 to address these issues by focusing on energy security, accessibility, affordability, and environmental sustainability. We’ve been at the forefront of hydropower consultancy in Sabah since 2014 and are honoured to lead the Sabah Hydropower Development Masterplan (SHDM), a comprehensive initiative to unlock Sabah's hydropower potential and diversify its energy generation mix. As part of the SHDM, we’ve used hydrological mode studies and high-resolution digital terrain models to provide precise estimates of hydropower potential whilst simultaneously considering climate change impacts and economic viability. The potential in Sabah is immense, and we look forward to continuing to support the Energy Commission of Sabah to secure energy independence into the future. It has been a privilege being involved in the Sabah Hydropower Development Masterplan, looking at creating a robust framework for identifying economically and sustainable hydropower sites in Sabah, Malaysia.   Across three planned phases, we conducted foundational studies, used digital tools to map potential hydropower sites looking at catchment areas and flow characteristics, and created conceptual layouts for each site considering critical factors like terrain, size, and potential impact on infrastructure and natural reserves.  If you want to know more about our hydropower expertise, get in touch!
