This episode of Start With Questions welcomes school leader and author Bradley James Davies. We talk through tough questions regarding people-pleasing for school leaders. Balance is an impractical standard, but calibration is the key! For those who struggle with finding the balance between being present as a school leader and a loved one outside of their job, this episode of our podcast, Start With Questions, is for you. Teacher Leaders often consider walking away from their jobs simply because of #burnout. Bradley’s advice for teacher leaders in this unhealthy loop is, “Don't do more; become better.” Check out the full episode on Spotify: https://shorturl.at/AJPU6. Margaret Thorsborne quoted this in our most recent podcast, which has stuck with me! She is 100% right. In every relationship we have, we experience rupture. It's part of the human experience. Rupture is supposed to happen. Unfortunately, I feel I have lost many friendships due to ruptures and the other party not knowing how to repair so they either deflect, ghost or suppress. I've seen relationships between teachers and students diminish due to the teacher not knowing how, or choosing not to repair. Similarly, the same happens with colleagues. This is such a huge part of emotional intelligence. We understand our role in relationships, when we contribute to a rupture and how we can repair. Listen to the podcast with Marg and I on restorative cultures in schools if you'd like to learn more about this in a school setting. Effort Praise > Performance Praise This recent Andrew Huberman podcast provides amazing guidance based on a research paper titled "Praise for intelligence can undermine children's motivation and performance" If you're a parent, especially of young kids, watch the full clip posted in the comments. Unfortunately, this effort praise strategy is the exact opposite of how many people grew up, where they only received identity praise which inevitably can be stifling and destructive. Reward yourself and others for effort! #mindset #leadership #growth #parenting

Building connected leaders, engaged organizations, and positive social impact | Educational Consultant | Keynote Speaker | Leadership & Communication Coach | Author | Podcast Host
I often work with leaders on being able to let things “roll off their backs,” to not internalize every concern or complaint. To not take things too personally… Because leaders who get easily defensive struggle to build trust with their teams. Oftentimes folks just need to be heard - and it's not about you or something you did wrong, or even something that's in your control. In episodes 7 and 9 of Principal Pep Talks, we covered the first two themes to enhance your leadership. Today, in Episode 10, we're diving into the third theme… and it’s a tricky one. Our focus is on non-defensiveness—mastering the art of receiving feedback without taking it personally. Key takeaways from today’s Pep Talk: 🔹 Being a “punching bag” for angry parents 🔹 How do you, as a leader, handle input? 🔹 How do you give input? 🔹 What if the feedback you are receiving is actually more of an attack? Love the show? Please tell all your colleagues about it! And rate it and review it on Apple Podcasts. Just a few short words really help folks find the show. Thank you! :) #principalpeptalks #leadership #nondefensiveness #feedback #executivecoaching #leadershipdevelopment #podcast

A little check-in goes a long way. Ever sent a text just to ask someone how they're doing? It's not just about tasks or goals—it's about seeing the person beyond the quotas and genuinely caring for those around us. Imagine the impact of asking, "How can I support you?" without expecting anything in return. Let’s sprinkle a bit of unexpected kindness into our daily connections. Whether it’s a note, a call, or just showing up, every act of appreciation counts. I wanted to share a reflection from our producer, Natalie Scanlon, on Episode #010 of the In the Arena Podcast with Scott Barrow (ICF-PCC). With her unique vantage point, Natalie sees and hears not just the words spoken, but everything that lay in between. Her thoughts on Episode #010 with Scott Barrow and myself offer a unique perspective on our conversation, as well as the profound layers that leadership and coaching are made of. Play on! ------------ The Layers of Leadership – “What’s important to you?” Episode #010 of the In the Arena Podcast with Scott Barrow and Cameron Schwab is a direct insight into the process of coaching and its impact. As quiet flies on the wall, we watch and listen to two men who sit in vulnerability with the intention of finding themselves to help better others. Showcasing the inner, deeper work leaders need to do to be the best they can be. For others. For an organisation. For themselves. We watch as the layers of leadership slowly come together, creating a leader equipped to take on the challenges that inevitably occur when in a leadership role. Beginning with the foundations of openness, trust and vulnerability, a delicate layer of understanding and empathy is added. This then leads to an awareness and acceptance of self, finishing with cajoling toward a topping of ' teaching others'. We, almost unknowingly, witness the collaboration of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors of leadership that come to life with the honest support of another. A truth-teller. A coach. A friend. This isn’t a leadership masterclass, it’s a vulnerable coaching session, showcasing how leaders are required to be human but are, often, so much more than that. Notebook ready… --------------- Episode #010 of 'In the Arena' Podcast with Scott Barrow is available across leading streaming platforms.
