It’s about seeing potential, nurturing talent, and building a team that’s resilient, diverse, and innovative. As they say in the classroom, it’s not about having the right answers; it’s about asking the right questions.

The balance between hiring for an immediate need and supporting a long-term vision is a delicate one. I'm not sure that I have it figured out just yet, but I will say that having a quarterly hiring plan that we set at the end of the previous year does help keep the vision at the front of my mind while I'm in the flurry of hiring. How do you think about immediacy vs. long-term vision when you are #hiring?

Well, you guessed it! We demolished those poor phones again! What could be better than a random call from a person you don't know inquiring about a potential role for you?? Those calls, though at times may seem odd, could potentially be life-changing! We, ourselves, are pretty familiar with stepping outside our comfort zone! Just last quarter, we partnered with a commercial insurance and employee benefits company, taking a step away from our bread and butter: building products and interiors. This local company was on the hunt for key contributors in hot markets such as our very own Grand Rapids! Because these candidates needed to have experience in building big books of business, we worked our way through many difficult conversations in an effort to convince someone to step away from their established success to try something new. After calling hundreds of candidates, we finally came across the diamond in the rough that was ready and eager for the new challenge. Are you ready to try something new with your hiring process? Hire someone who doesn’t point out problems but comes with solutions. 1000% the most valuable asset in any colleague is their attitude, their passion. That’s the X Factor when it comes to being successful in any given role.
Don't hire somebody just because they're smart. Smart is great and smart has potential, but smart doesn’t get the job done. Hire someone who can get stuff done and stick to deadlines. Hire someone you would want to grab lunch in the office with. Hire someone who doesn’t point out problems but comes with solutions. Smart is not the same as hard working or diligent — confusing them might just be the biggest hiring mistake you make.
