This week, we're celebrating MRI Safety Week, an essential time to focus on the practices that keep our patients and staff safe. MRI safety is crucial. Each year, millions of MRI scans are performed, providing invaluable insights into patient health. However, ensuring these scans are safe and effective requires strict adherence to safety protocols. From screening for metal objects to using appropriate ear protection, every step is vital. As radiologists, we must stay vigilant and updated on best practices. Join us in prioritizing MRI safety, not just this week, but every day. The Radiology Report Podcast has an episode on MR Safety featuring Tobias Gilk, an MR safety expert, where him and Daniel Arnold discuss best practices for creating a safe imaging environment. Tobias shares his background and journey to becoming an MRI safety expert, which started as an architect with a passion for creating safe spaces. Tobias explains the importance of MR safety and the worst things that can happen if it is not prioritized. He also sheds light on some of the most common safety issues that he has observed in MRI facilities and discusses the lack of regulations in MR Safety. Daniel and Tobias also discuss Tobias' MR safety courses and who can benefit from them. Tobias explains that the courses are designed for a wide range of professionals, including MRI technologists, radiologists, administrators - essentially anybody who has a direct role in policies, procedures, and practices related to the safety of patients in the MRI environment. Attendees can expect to learn about the latest best practices, guidelines, and regulations related to MRI safety, as well as practical tips for implementing them in their workplace. If you are interested in learning more about the building blocks of MR safety and how to create a safe imaging environment, tune in to this episode with Tobias Gilk. Find me something more nerve wracking than finding the results after your tests at the hospital. In the health industry, time is crucial. A small delay of a few days/hrs and even minutes can make all the difference in treatment. Even with the high end technology at our hands, I have observed delays in basic tasks like getting reports on time. This issue is commonly encountered while getting radiology reports. And often, these delays happen because hospitals simply don't have enough radiologists on staff. Let's see, if a small hospital has 4 CT scan machines but 1 radiologist - I guess we can do the math here - delay is inevitable. Thus, in order to solve this issue we have been working on making radiology online with our "Daily Radiology" project with the aim of building a network that connects hospitals with specialists anywhere in the world. It's like having a team of expert radiologists on call, 24/7. Is it necessary ? Yes. I've been in those hospital waiting rooms. I've seen the worry on patients' faces. Furthermore, faster reports mean faster diagnosis and treatment plans. It's a win for everyone involved. Have you ever been to the hospital and waited for hours before getting an opinion from specialists? Share your experience below.

Radiologist and podcaster helping doctors learn financial topics via Doctor Money Matters (Podcast/FB group/YouTube) I also created the American Radiologists FB group (>5700 Radiologists)
As the creator of the largest social media group for American Radiologists, I have a unique vantage point on the current Radiology market and its evolving demands. Over the last 3 to 4 years, radiologists have been working significantly harder, handling more complicated studies with higher volume and acuity. This increased workload has led to a pressing need for balance and greater support from employers, practices, and institutions. It's a striking juxtaposition: while radiologists are vocal about their intensified workload and the complexities they face, many outside the field are only just beginning to grasp the severity and difficulty of the situation. The ongoing demands from patients, referring physicians, emergency departments, and administrators are exerting unprecedented pressures on radiologists—pressures that I haven't witnessed in my nearly 18 years as an attending radiologist. Understanding and addressing these challenges is crucial. Radiologists are pivotal to the healthcare system, and their well-being directly impacts patient care. It's time for a collective effort to support these essential professionals and ensure a sustainable and balanced working environment. #Radiology #Radiologist #radiologists #Healthcare #MedicalProfession #RadiologistSupport #HealthcareIndustry #MedicalCommunity #WorkLifeBalance

I've been saying this for years... For some hospitals, positions like this have existed for just as long, but there is lack of much-needed standardization. It's exciting to hear work is being done here considering the shortages imaging professionals are experiencing now. When I was in my radiography program in the 1990s, I was hired as a "Darkroom Tech", meaning duties I was responsible for included patient transport, developing x-ray film, producing film copies, subtraction images, tracking exams for the technologists, etc. The closer I got to graduation, the more they allowed me to do things like prepare barium for exams, screen patients, help set up sterile trays for arthrograms, myelograms, and lumbar punctures, and assist with MRI patient screenings. This set me apart from the other Darkroom Techs (who weren't in x-ray school already learning these skills). I felt like I was becoming a more valuable member of the team prior to being hired as a technologist and I only wished there was a structured method to include others on the team in this training and competency. The same feels true today (minus the film/screen work). With so many technologists retiring and leaving healthcare in radiology now, with the new grad funnels struggling to keep up with the needs, the gaps must be bridged to allow hospital employees, professionals and practitioners to work at the peak of their scope of practice. Efforts like this can free them up to do just that with clearly defined roles and appropriate education and training. Who knows what the possibilities might be with patient satisfaction, productivity, and job satisfaction!
