Eco-beer is brewed from the water that goes down your sink “When you think beyond the sink, the world can drink and drink and drink.” That’s exactly what one American brewery encourages people to do - and for sound environmental reasons. With the help of a clean-tech start-up, Devil’s Canyon Brewery has created a beer made using water from the showers, laundry and bathroom sinks of a San Francisco apartment block. The wastewater that goes down your drain, from everywhere except your toilet, is called grey water. It contains a variety of dirt and chemicals but hasn’t come into contact with faeces. It might not sound appealing, but grey water can be processed back into drinking water. Aaron’s company builds and installs on-site water processing units which have been proven to reduce water demands (and therefore bills) by up to 95 per cent. It takes around seven gallons of water to produce just one gallon of beer. In a future where water is scarce, beer could be too. For the ‘Epic OneWater Brew’ project Epic Cleantec and Devil’s Canyon Brewery installed a water treatment unit in the basement of a 40-storey San Francisco apartment building. They are collecting in this building about 7,500 gallons per day of grey water that we are treating, putting through an advanced treatment process and then turning into clean treated water. The concept of eco-beer brewed from recycled grey water reflects innovative thinking in sustainable water management. By leveraging technology and public engagement, such initiatives contribute to addressing global water challenges and promoting responsible consumption practices. # Epic Cleantec # Canyon Brewery # Eco-beer # Grey water

Today, we share the second video in our 3-part series on the kitchen gardens we've established in schools nationwide. In this video, we focus a bit more on the pressing issue of food security and showcase how this initiative is making a difference. By teaching young minds the benefits of planting and growing their own food, we are not just planting and nurturing gardens but also cultivating knowledge and resilience. This project is a testament to Massy Stores' unwavering commitment to being a strong corporate citizen. We believe in investing in our communities and empowering future generations through education and sustainable practices. Take a look at the video to see how this initiative is a small yet impactful step towards closing the gap, one garden at a time. #MassyStores #FoodSecurity #Sustainability #CommunityInvestment #Education #CorporateCitizenship

If you love bourbon, you're going to support this initiative. The American white oak is in crisis, which could spell disaster for bourbon lovers, as it's the only acceptable material for bourbon barrels. In an acorn shell, without help, white oak populations will decline. Fortunately, as divisive as politics may be, the White Oak Initiative earned bipartisan support. Their goal is to restore white oak populations through research, strategy, and funding in collaboration with the public and private sectors. Distillers are already doing their part by researching and planting thousands of trees. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4cE3Pne #itcomesfromtrees #whiteoakinitiative #sustainability

As Oregonians, we all may not realize that almost all of the seafood we consume here is not sourced from Oregon waters. It is shipped from hither and yon to our stores. What if instead, the tables were turned and instead — fresh local seafood was the Oregon norm? To find out why that matters and how it could happen…take a read on this article…
A recent study by the Oregon Coast Visitors Association (OCVA) found that 90 percent of the seafood consumed on the Oregon Coast is not sourced locally. In an effort to shift that trend, OCVA has launched the Ocean Cluster Initiative. The initiative aims to help Oregon's communities capture more economic, public health, and environmental value from local sea fare. An increase of just 10% in local seafood staying in Oregon markets can result in a $90 million economic impact. You can help by checking out Sea Grant's list of restaurants and markets offering local seafood:

Fascinating: https://lnkd.in/gAGgmCjS This is documentary material. Someone should make one. [..] Thirteen years ago, the town’s residents prevented corrupt officials and a local cartel from illegally cutting down native forests to make way for the crop. A group of locals took loggers hostage while others incinerated their trucks. Soon, townspeople had kicked out the police and local government, cancelled elections, and locked down the whole area. A revolutionary experiment was under way. Months later, Cherán reopened with an entirely new state apparatus in place. Political parties were banned, and a governing council had been elected; a reforestation campaign was undertaken to replenish the barren hills; a military force was chartered to protect the trees and the town’s water supply; some of the country’s most advanced water filtration and recycling programmes were created. And the avocado was outlawed. Citing the Mexican constitution, which guarantees Indigenous communities the right to autonomy, Cherán petitioned the state for independence. In 2014, the courts recognised the municipality, and it now receives millions of dollars a year in state funding. Today, it is an independent zone where the purples and yellows of the Purépecha flag, representing the Indigenous nation in the region, is as common as the Mexican standard. What started as a public safety initiative has become a radical oddity, a small arcadia governed by militant environmentalism in the heart of avocado country.[..]

Great News! Killarney Towers Hotel & Leisure Centre have managed to achieve an FSG Silver award for their sustainable efforts! They have measured their environmental impact, observed and learnt from their building and implemented a green action plan of activities to help them manage and reduce their impact on the environment. They are now well on their way to reduce their impact on the environment A few of their fantastic achievements so far: ✔️Launched Killarney urban Farm & installed 12 Hydroponic Towers to create harvest food with reduced water use and zero food miles. Reducing our food miles will also contribute towards our efforts to reduce carbon emissions. This is Irelands first hydroponic farm servicing bars and restaurants in Kerry. ✔️Reduction of landfill waste by 50% achieved in part through the elimination of single-use plastics. ✔️Food waste reduced by 14% through menu engineering and collaborations on culinary team ✔️Water consumption reduced by 10% and energy usage by 20% through monthly energy and water monitoring. What can we learn from the industry failures we see in vertical farming? Start a new food system instead of trying to convert vertical farming into industrial farming? That’s sort of our take on it. The only crew doing that right is Gotham Greens. Instead of an industrial commercial farm model consider what we have been doing since 2016 : helping small local businesses starting small local farms where people live work and commute. Start a new food system with Green Food Solutions. 🌱 It’s interesting to see many of our peers locally from NYC who rose up in the industry as we were as well ,who went in the large industrial direction or consulting in the industrial model not turn out and now turn to speaking of the local or hybrid or small distributed farm model now or recently more so. Most known are Agritecture,Smallhold and Farm. One ( two closures and one message shift) I wish them all well for what’s next and for the new message towards vertical farming models that can really work and make a difference for people , their profits and the planet 🌍….but can’t help but notice that our male peers seldom recognize us or acknowledge what we have been doing even as they now advocate for it. Is that sexism? While I’m thankful they see the new models and their failures realized.,Fail fast they say, Will the sting of sexism dictate that men can fail then just roll with that they are coming up with a new good idea? Or spin it to leverage off of it as often happens between women and men in lots of industries? I know the sexist response is to think wow she must be crazy to say that. It’s just so obvious and worth pointing out. If you have experienced sexism or are against it, like this post. 💚🌱
