Help us eradicate invasive plants at Richmond Hill Park this coming Sunday🌱 Richmond Hill Park is Asheville’s largest forested park and hosts miles of trails. Despite its suburban location, Richmond Hill has a diversity of native plants that are being choked out by nonnative invasive plants. Participants will receive training in plant ID + invasive species control methods. Join MountainTrue Biologist Josh Kelly from 1-5 p.m. this Sunday, September 15, to remove nonnative invasive plants and help the native forest thrive! Register: bit.ly/3AR3vnu

Check out our superstar High Country team in this article from Associated Press: "On the whooshing Watauga River, excavators claw at the remains of Shulls Mill Dam, pulling concrete apart piece by piece and gradually opening a waterway kept in check for nearly two centuries... 'What’s so important about the hellbender is they need special habitat — clear, clean, cold, heavily oxygenated water,' said Andy Hill, a Watauga Riverkeeper with MountainTrue, which teamed up with American Rivers to remove the dam in July. 'The hellbender is kind of a keystone species for a mountain stream ecosystem, and removal of this dam will create new habitat.'" More: bit.ly/4df3qrY

MountainTrue has joined the Southern Environmental Law Center and other environmental advocates in asking the US Environmental Protection Agency to take back the authority to regulate water pollution in North Carolina. We’ve made this dire decision because the state legislature has crippled the Department of Environmental Quality’s — the state’s environmental regulatory agency — ability to protect our waterways, drinking water sources, and communities from harmful pollution. The blame falls squarely on the actions of the North Carolina General Assembly, which has systematically captured the regulatory process, underfunded state regulators, and sought to undermine public participation in permitting decisions. They’ve shown that they can’t be trusted to stand up to corporate polluters and special interests, and now we’re forced to ask the EPA to intervene.
