Steinway Moving & Storage completed its fourth transport of 2024 for the @gothamfoodpantry, delivering an impressive 16,289 lbs of fresh fruits and veggies last week! This brings their year total to a remarkable 69,164 lbs, equal to 57,637 healthy meals for those in need. Working with Move For Hunger since 2012, Steinway has helped rescue 177,128 lbs of food to date. Their commitment has made a tremendous impact, bridging the gap between surplus food and families facing hunger. We also want to highlight the crucial work of the Gotham Food Pantry. They’re committed to making food accessible to all by organizing distributions at public housing communities and installing and keeping community fridges stocked in areas with high food insecurity rates. Opportunities like these demonstrate the power of collaboration and what we can achieve when we work together. Thank you, Steinway, for your unwavering support, and thank you, Gotham Food Pantry, for all that you do!

Food 🥘 Insecurity is a complex issue that goes beyond just hunger, as it encompasses various factors such as affordability, availability, and utilization of food. The face of food insecurity can be seen in different forms: 1. The working poor: Many individuals and families who are employed still struggle to afford enough food. They may have low-paying jobs or face circumstances that make it difficult to cover basic expenses, including food. 2. Children: Food insecurity disproportionately affects children. Lack of proper nutrition can have severe consequences on their physical and cognitive development, leading to long-term health and educational challenges. 3. Seniors: Older adults who are on fixed incomes or have limited access to resources may find it challenging to afford nutritious meals regularly. They may prioritize other expenses, such as healthcare, over food, which can negatively impact their overall well-being. This partnership is an example of our ongoing commitment towards being part of the solution for our communities. #foodinsecurity
Far too many of the New Yorkers we serve at Services for the UnderServed struggle to put food on the table each day. Our new partnership with Sharing Excess is an important step in expanding our work to address New York’s food insecurity crisis and help more New Yorkers access the nutritious food they need. Our South Bronx Community Fridges will continue to be stocked with healthy food that is deeply needed in the community. https://lnkd.in/eGxvke6k

Addi Road Food Pantry Marrickville is open again. It’s a warm, drizzly day in Sydney, one of those slow-down-even-if-you-want-to-go-fast days. Reflective time to take in the fact one year has passed and a new one is really here to stay a while. What might that mean? Change is gonna come? Or business as usual, last year’s struggles and issues on the repeat button? It will take more than neat buzzwords like ‘resilience’ to get through. It will take substantial community support, engagement that grounds people in a few certainties, and reminders they are not alone in the struggle. Customers take shelter on rows of plastic seats beneath a narrow verandah outside the Addi Road Food Pantry; more are standing on the road accepting the drizzle; others gather beneath a big tree immediately opposite the main entrance that children like to climb. You get that funny feeling of solidarity and loneliness, of need and play as everyone comes together, less of a shopping venture than something basic and shared, a way to stay human and connected. In all, there are maybe thirty or so people inside the Food Pantry. Almost forty outside, waiting, chatting to one another or enjoying their own quiet. Steady as she goes. For $5 you can usually score about $20 worth of groceries, choosing from the shelves, fridges and freezers. Once you’ve spent your $5 you also qualify for free bread and a selection of free fruit and vegetables. The operating structure means that people get whatever they like along with a guarantee of nutritional extras and staples like bread. Our Addi Road volunteers keep the place humming. Our donors supply us with food, much of it rescued by us to prevent it from going into landfill and turning into greenhouse gases. Most of the people who shop at our pantry take some pride in helping us to do the right thing for the environment.... + READ the full story on our opening day for Addi Road Food Pantry Marrickville on the link below. #addiroad #foodjustice #marrickville #foodpantry #rescuedfood #environment #donors #newyear #sydney2024 #community #wellbeing #mentalhealth #connection #volunteers #housingcrisis #rents #inequality https://lnkd.in/gZABiVtW

HUNGER CAN'T WAIT — The Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina - an Action Pathways Inc. program - has introduced a farmer's market at its Food Distribution Center in Fayetteville, where those facing hunger can choose fresh produce and meats, and it has been a game-changer. On average, 200 families have taken advantage of the market each time it is open, a testament to the program's success and the community's support. SHFB is committed to expanding these markets to communities in its 7-county service area where the need is urgent. In this service area, 16.7%, or over 130,000 individuals, are food insecure. Together, we can make a significant difference in these communities because HUNGER CAN'T WAIT! 🌱Calling all growers!🌱 🙋♀️Could you share your passion for fresh produce with your community? 👨🌾Could you grow a little to share with your local food hub? Could you donate surplus? 🫘You can get FREE seeds from your local hubs thanks to Notcutts Ltd. Norwich! Today we launched the Nourishing Norfolk Growers program! We're inviting allotment holders, gardeners, farmers, and anyone with a love for locally-grown produce to contribute to their community. Through our 24 Nourishing Norfolk food hubs, we want to address the challenge of accessing fresh, healthy food amidst the current cost-of-living crisis. While food banks offer emergency aid, our hubs are helping people find healthy, affordable food on their doorsteps. Sourcing fresh produce, however, remains a challenge for these hubs. We are urging communities to unite, and encouraging growers to donate surplus produce regularly, or as one-off contributions to combat food waste. Through a partnership with Notcutts garden centres, individuals interested in growing food for their community can acquire free seeds from local hubs. ➡️https://lnkd.in/eefMJHv7

Today on World Hunger Day, we are reflecting on the 1.6 million North Carolina households who don’t have enough to eat. Farmer Foodshare exists to change that number. We work to ensure everyone in North Carolina has healthy, delicious food to eat, not just today, but every day. In the heart of such a bountiful growing region and robust local food system, it is inexcusable that our neighbors lack access to healthy meals. We envision a Triangle-area community where fresh, local food is available to all, regardless of income level. You can help! Your support today means we can continue expanding our hunger relief and food justice programs all year. And since we always source from local farmers, you’re also contributing to the resiliency of our Triangle-area foodshed – a win-win for food security! Make a gift now through the link below: https://lnkd.in/eFHVnH9Q We look forward to a time when our society and economy is more just and equitable, but until then, we will continue making sure eaters of all income levels can share in the local harvest. . . . . . . . . #farmerfoodshare #farmerfoodshareprograms #hungerrelief #foodshed #foodaccess #foodsecurity #northcarolina #foodhub #sproutnewgrowth #farmerfoodsharecommunity

Did you know that food insecurity affects rural America in the following ways: *In 2021, 11% of rural households were food insecure. *9 out of 10 counties with the highest food insecurity rates are rural. *Rural communities make up 63% of all U.S counties, but 87% of counties with the highest food insecurity rates. *Food insecurity is linked to a wide range of negative health outcomes, and rural Americans are at higher risk for poor health outcomes than their urban counterparts. *Although food security is slightly higher in rural areas than in urban areas, 12.5% of individuals living in rural communities were food insecure in 2019. Your dollars make a difference. Every $1 = 2 meals. Start your new year off right and donate today!
There is only one place for neighbors to buy groceries in Sabetha, a rural Kansas town that is home to fewer than 3,000 people. That means if someone can't find the nutritious foods that meet their needs—or isn't able to afford them—they are left with little to no options. Luckily, the town's community food pantry is there to help fill the meal gap when times are difficult and uncertain.

Regenerative Solutions-research/design/coordination of living system solutions - ending pollution (water/air/soil), drought, floods, wildfires and hunger while transitioning to a regenerative economy.
What do food deserts, food security, #nutrition, water, drought, flooding, groundwater depletion, industrial agriculture, urban farming, planetary health and people health have in common? Friends and colleagues outside of the USA are usually quite shocked when I share the state of humanitarian and environmental crisis we are currently experiencing here. It's taken decades of degenerative practices by local, state and federal government, financial institutions and industry to fall to the low extremes we find ourselves today. What makes matters worse is we've simultaneously spread those degenerative practices abroad over the past 4 decades. This article highlights a negative result from one area of our degenerative practices in our #foodsystems but it falls short in covering holistic solutions. There are approximately 28 million #foodinsecure people in the USA and this article does well in acknowledging the large number of #fooddeserts which exist here. Allocating funds for local #foodaccess infrastructure is important but how is it a wise use of tax-payer dollars if those grocery stores close their doors within several years of opening or cannot insure a steady supply of nutrient dense food due to long distance importing and/or the food has been grown in nutrient poor soils? Given that approximately 55% of the world's population now lives in urban areas (with that number projected to reach just under 70% by the year 2050), would a better use of funds be the education of individual families, neighborhoods and #communities to learn how to grow at least of portion of their own healthy foods where they live, work and play? Utilizing #greenroofs, alleyways, vacant lots, apartment and condo balconies, backyards, schoolyards, government and corporate campuses, etc. to grow a portion of the needed food in a #community would go a very long way in increasing #foodsecurity and #communityhealth. Added benefits can include spending more time outside, in nature, as well as increasing face-to-face social interactions while increasing community practices. We can also stack functions and create a multi-benefit system when we expand beyond a single-focused outcome. While we increase local food security in the aforementioned ways, why not add #rainwaterharvesting to aid #stormwatermanagement and help reduce #waterloss down drains, #groundwater drawdown and #drought? This also helps to #rehydratelandscapes, repair the small #water cycle and build the soil sponge to help reduce #flooding. I've only scratched the surface of #possibilities here. Let's move toward more #holistic solutions and #systemsthinking so that we're increasing our regenerative capacity. #Plantaryhealth = #PeopleHealth.

The Idaho Department of Education is seeking sponsors for this year’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The SFSP provides free meals and snacks to children 18 years and younger by operating sites located in low-income areas during the summer months. Learn more and/or sign up to sponsor a site ⬇️ ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dqwaQ6w According to Feeding America’s 2021 Map the Meal Gap, about 8.6 percent of Idaho’s children have experienced food insecurity. During the summer months, the challenge of reaching children and families in need of nutritional support grows. Sponsors are being sought across the state, especially in #rural areas where coverage gaps exist. The department is partnering with the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force to increase awareness and recruitment. Needs include: 📍 Region 1: There is a lack of adequate coverage in the communities of St. Maries, Boundary County, Kootenai, Kellogg and Wallace. 📍 Region 2: The only SFSP sponsors in Region 2 are in Lewiston, Lapwai, Moscow and Grangeville. 📍 Region 3: Only the Boise and West Ada school districts, as well as the Boys and Girls Club of Ada County currently cover Ada County. 📍 Region 6: SFSP does not have sponsors in Custer and Teton counties and only one in Lemhi County. #Idaho #education #FullBellies #CuriousMinds #FoodInsecurity #HungerRelief #community #SummerFoodServiceProgram

We have a story in the latest issue of Neighbourhood Media detailing all the work we do via Addison Road Food Pantry Camperdown, our low-cost grocery store which makes use of rescued, donated and purchased food to support the local community and its needs. The story (link below) shows how we help feed people from Mission Australia's Common Ground housing project and the nearby Johanna O’Dea Court, a multi-storey NSW Family and Community Services apartment block. It also explains how we serve people living on a tight budget in Camperdown and Glebe, as well as people who come to the pantry from right across the City of Sydney LGA. Most of all, the story is a celebration of our monthly Addi Road 'Let's Get Cooking' sessions (AKA "the Cook-Up"), which offers 260 free hot meals for Mission Australia and Joanna O'Dea residents, as well as those shopping at our Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. These sessions involve a monthly cooking demo inside the Common Ground building. Food literacy is the ultimate goal behind Addi Road's Let's Get Cooking program. As well as simply providing a free hot meal (and dessert) each month, we look at helping people to shop AND cook with often very limited funds. Each month there are easy recipes on offer (and ready to be tasted) along extra tips for stocking people's kitchen cupboards; a list of essentials to facilitate simple, inexpensive and nutritious recipes that will match whatever Addi Road Food Pantry might have in stock. It's about building an integrated food ecology for people battling. With a few extra special ingredients over a shared meal as the community comes together: camaraderie and connection. + #Addiroad #cityofsydney #foodrelief #foodjustice #housing #inequality #Camperdown #Glebe #MissionAustralia #homeless #battling #costofliving #poverty #resilience #mentalhealth #wellbeing #nutrition #diet #charity #community #freemeals #cookingworkshop #volunteers #caring #education #connection #letsgetcooking #neighbourhoodmedia https://lnkd.in/gs7vVEvM
