🎗️Today marks the first day of #SarcomaAwarenessMonth! Did you know that sarcoma is often called the "forgotten cancer" because of its rarity? Because of this, sarcoma is often misdiagnosed. According to the National Foundation for Cancer Research, "Sarcomas are rare in adults and make up approximately 1% of all adult cancer diagnoses." Sarcoma is a type of cancer that begins in bone or in the soft tissues of the body, including cartilage, fat, muscle, blood vessels, fibrous tissue, or other connective or supportive tissue. (National Cancer Institute) While sarcoma can show in different ways, the most common way is through a lump or bump that may become painful and grows over time. However, this isn't always the case. 13% of all cancers diagnosed in adults older than 20 years of age are rare and in 2017 that was over 200,000 (!!!) cancer cases. Rare cancers can be more difficult to catch early affecting survival rates and patient prognosis and importantly, treatments for rare cancers are limited. It's also relevant to note that many rare cancers especially of the respiratory and digestive system disproportionately affect people of color. In the case of gallbladder cancer: only 10% of the cancers are diagnosed at a local stage, and overall 5-year survival is just 19%. One of my favorite humans (especially in the life science space) Megan Nacar is participating in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's Cycle for Survival to raise money for rare cancers. If you know me well, you probably know that I'm an avid weightlifter and in a past life I was a personal trainer (although I still tend to end up moonlighting as a PT for close friends and family 😂 ). This is all to say - being sedentary is a known risk factor for cancer per the NCI and there is a significant body of research around exercise's beneficial effect on survival particularly in those with colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and prostate cancer with up to a 45% (!!) decrease in risk of death. So, in my eyes this is the perfect initiative to donate to. - Building community ✅ - Money for rare cancers ✅ - Promoting exercise ✅ What isn't there to love about this initiative? I'm just very jealous I'm a 6.5 hour plane ride away from it. There is a $500 boost towards research that Megan and her team earn if she hits her donation goal, so if you can, please consider donating!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as a Triple Negative Breast Cancer survivor, I have a couple of tips and one important request. I share my cancer journey to support those who might face a similar diagnosis and to emphasize the importance of early detection. #1: Surviving breast cancer is possible, especially with early diagnosis. Mammograms and self-exams are crucial tools—don't overlook them! I used to delay my mammograms, thinking I was too busy. But in reality, even a couple of months could have drastically altered my prognosis. Prioritize your health, and encourage your loved ones to do the same. #2: Donate to cancer prevention, treatment, or research organizations. The size of the donation doesn’t matter—it’s the act that counts. Take care of yourself, and let’s continue to support one another. #breastcancerawarenessmonth started yesterday. The World Health Organization Global Breast Cancer Initiative says that no one should face breast cancer alone, it aims to reduce global breast cancer mortality by promoting early detection, improving health system capacities, and ensuring access to quality care. Awareness is the first step in the fight against breast cancer. Early detection undoubtably saves lives so when you get the opportunity use your social profiles to raise awareness of symptoms and support charitable campaigns.
