A new report found the three most effective alcohol frames are: There are more harms than we are told; These harms come about for many reasons beyond individual choices or culture; We can move alcohol away from centre stage in our lives without spoiling the show. [Alcohol Change UK] https://lnkd.in/e4b7RyHV "Framing approaches emphasising that ‘alcohol is not essential to anything’, suggesting that alcohol industry profits are at a cost to others including pressure on the NHS and crimes and emphasising loss of control were amongst the least effective," it found. The report gave a mixed verdict on the framing, "We now know that if we drink less alcohol, fewer people will suffer and die from cancer,” was mixed because it tended to boost agreement that "personal choices are the main cause of alcohol problems". It also raises issues about the right to know cancer risks, the right emphasis for the cancer risks at low levels and the possibility it might lead to less support for effective policies because consumers find the message "threatening". AR: The issue with, "We now know that if we drink less alcohol, fewer people will suffer and die from cancer” may lie in the "if we drink less alcohol" bit. It emphasises personal choice to drink, so possibly boosting the idea these choices the "main cause of alcohol problems". Our choices are not made in splendid isolation. We make them in an environment, economy, set of beliefs, and feelings. So, yes, we make choices, like on whether to drink alcohol, but they are highly influenced by factors beyond our control. Policies can change them.

If someone says "drug use," what comes to mind? Here's a guess: a lot of things might pop into your head, but alcohol isn't one of them. ...but why is that? Alcohol is just as much an intoxicating chemical as anything we normally consider a recreational "drug." Why have we collectively opted to carve it out and put it into its own separate (and socially accepted, if not outright celebrated) category? For my latest article on Psychology Today, I expand on an idea from a recent LinkedIn post: that alcohol use has been so normalized in the United States that we've lost sight of the true public health cost of making it ubiquitous in so many facets of our social life. If 178,000 people in the US can be dying each year from alcohol but using the term "alcohol epidemic" would still strike most people as odd, how bad does it have to get before we take our collective alcohol problem seriously? #alcoholawarenessmonth #alcohol #alcoholepidemic #addiction #publichealth https://lnkd.in/gUt_-3ag

🍹 Raise Awareness, Save Lives! 🍹 This Alcohol Awareness Week 2024, let’s come together to tackle the issues surrounding alcohol misuse. From 1st-7th July, we’ll be supporting the campaign by Alcohol Change UK to promote healthier choices and reduce harm. Discover more about the initiative here: https://lnkd.in/erKr4-g Understanding alcohol harm Alcohol can sometimes plays a centre-stage role in our lives. It’s promoted as we watch our favourite sports, advertised as we travel to work and strategically placed in our favourite films and TV shows. It’s there when we celebrate, commiserate and when we’re just trying to cope. Yet alcohol is harming our health and wellbeing on a daily basis, from the quality of the sleep we’re getting, to our relationships with those we love. And each year, thousands of people experience long-term health problems as a result of the alcohol they drink, or die from alcohol-related causes. But alcohol never impacts people in isolation. So this Alcohol Awareness Week, will explore exactly what we mean by ‘alcohol harm’ and challenging the stereotype of alcohol as an ‘individual’s problem’. We want to get the country talking about the role that alcohol plays in our society, and what it means to families, communities, health workers and those in our emergency services. 🚀 Our Commitment At Substancy, we’re dedicated to reducing drug-related harm. We provide innovative digital tools and consultancy services to support individuals and professionals in the psychoactive drug sector. Two in three Australians believe that our country has a problem with alcohol, according to a November 2023 survey by Alcohol Change Australia. 30% of Australians are concerned about the alcohol use of someone they know, while 80% are concerned about alcohol-related harm in our communities. At the same time, more Australians than ever are reconsidering their relationship with drinking. This is reflected in the rise of ‘sober curiosity’, particularly among younger generations. While this is a cause for optimism – alcohol harms are still widespread throughout our communities, and there is more to be done to support Australians to make informed decisions about alcohol. IMM is backing Alcohol Awareness Week (July 1-7), which aims to highlight the harm alcohol can cause. Alcohol Awareness Week is managed and hosted by Alcohol Change UK and focuses on awareness-raising and campaigning for change. This year's theme is 'understanding alcohol harm'. Alcohol is all around us. It’s promoted as we watch sport and plays a pivotal part in our favourite TV shows. It’s there when we celebrate, commiserate and touted as something that can help us cope. Yet, as Alcohol Change UK says, alcohol is harming our health and wellbeing on a daily basis, from the quality of the sleep we’re getting, to our relationships. Each year, thousands of people experience long-term health problems as a result of the alcohol they drink ... or die from alcohol-related causes. This awareness week focuses on what is meant by ‘alcohol harm’ and challenges the stereotype of alcohol as an ‘individual problem’. It aims to get people talking about the role alcohol plays in our society, and what it means to families, communities, health workers and those in our emergency services. Campaigners say with improved regulation of alcohol marketing, clearer labelling, better support and treatment, and a culture that places people, not alcohol, at the centre of things, we can protect and transform our public services and make improvements for all.
