Population screening is an important contributor to advancing health outcomes through the early detection of and successful intervention for chronic disease. #Screening2025 will focus on maximising the benefits and minimising the harms of screening for chronic disease. The two-day event, to be held in Sydney, will feature expert international and national speakers. We're calling for abstracts on topics including new technologies for screening, under screened and priority populations, data quality, program implementation and more. Submit your abstract by 6 November. https://lnkd.in/druukFAQ #PublicHealth #Screening #EarlyDetection #EarlyIntervention

The Australian Government's plan to better control how infant formulas are marketed in Australia is a win for parents and #PublicHealth. Alongside the Food for Health Alliance and Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), we celebrate this move that will help protect children’s health and prevent confusion. Currently the marketing of infant formulas in Australia is regulated by a voluntary agreement, but in a submission to the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC), the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care has outlined its plan to move to mandatory legislation and tighter controls. Drones are becoming more prevalent in our everyday lives, and it’s anticipated that drone delivery of fast food and alcohol will be the next big use for drones in our society. The current food delivery ecosystem is widely associated with unhealthy food consumption, and increased obesity rates due to availability and reductions in incidental exercise. Drone delivery services will likely be faster and cheaper than current options. While the food industry is likely to favour this new technology application that can increase profits by reducing labour costs, the potential implications for #PublicHealth are far-ranging. With the Queensland state election just nine days away, PHAA QLD Branch has rated the policies of the three major parties against five key #PublicHealth issues. For this election, some stark differences in scoring have emerged. PHAA gives the incumbent Labor party a ‘green’ rating against four of our five priorities: investing in #Prevention, protecting women and children, bold climate action, and First Nations' health. They scored a ‘yellow' rating on the fifth priority, building the public health workforce. The Greens were scored 'green' ratings against all five priorities. The Liberal National Party (LNP) scored four ‘red’ ratings, and one 'yellow' rating. Barely a month goes by without news of children and adolescents who are imprisoned and being mistreated in youth detention. A new parliamentary inquiry is providing an opportunity to consider alternatives to detention that support and rehabilitate youth who break the law. This is especially needed for those with disabilities relating to brain function (neurodisability), such as fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Here’s what we know about the incarceration of children and adolescents with FASD – and what we could do instead. ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/gQ9yCcvz Dr Fiona Robards Elizabeth Elliott #PublicHealth #YouthJustice

We are excited to announce that Uncle/Professor Tom Calma AO and Professor Catherine Chamberlain have agreed to join the PHAA First Nations Collective Project Team as its two Elder Governors. Being an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elder is not defined by age, but rather, Elders are recognised for their wisdom and leadership in their communities. As Elder Governors on the Collective Project, Prof Chamberlain and Prof Calma will combine their First Nations Eldership with their expertise in public health leadership, providing important high-level governance across the project. Prof Calma is an Aboriginal Elder from the Kungarakan tribal group and a member of the Iwaidja tribal group, whose traditional lands are near Darwin and the Cobourg Peninsula in the Northern Territory. He helped establish the National Congress of Australia’s First Peoples, the Tackling Indigenous Smoking program, and was the catalyst for the Close the Gap campaign. Prof Chamberlain is a descendant of the Truwulway clan (Palawa, Tasmania), a registered midwife and public health researcher, and heads the Indigenous Health Equity Unit at the University of Melbourne’s Onemda: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing group. We're grateful that Prof Chamberlain and Prof Calma will use their Eldership and decades of experience in Indigenous health to help guide the work of the Collective Project.
