💡 How to Fit a Square Peg in a Round Hole: Make the Hole Bigger or Make the Peg Smaller 💡 Its hard to believe that Sony started in warn torn Japan as a small radio repair company. The company’s first product was an electric rice cooker which could barely do the one thing it was designed to do. Founded in 1946, Sony was known as Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo (TTK), despite facing multiple failures, Masaru Ibuka, Sony's visionary founder kept testing new products. After achieving modest success in Tape recorders. He recognized the importance of staying abreast of global electronics trends and seizing new opportunities. The breakthrough came when Ibuka learned about transistors in 1952, leading to the creation of TTK's successful TR-55 transistor radio. But it was the vision for the world's smallest transistor radio, the TR-63, that truly set Sony on a path to success. Recognizing the potential of the USA market, Sony took two critical steps. First, they rebranded from the less memorable TTK to Sony, derived from the Latin word "Sonus," meaning "sound." This new name perfectly encapsulated the essence of the company's focus on radios and sound technology. Secondly, the challenge of marketing the "Pocket Radio" TR-63 was ingeniously tackled. The radio was marketed as pocket radio, but it didn’t fit the typical businessman’s dress shirt pocket. To tackle this problem, Sony tailored custom-made shirts with slightly larger pockets for its sales team, ensuring that the TR-63 fit snugly and comfortably. This clever move not only made the product more appealing but also created a buzz around its innovative design and portability. The success of the TR-63 marked Sony's entry into the USA market and set the stage for their iconic Walkman, one of the company's most beloved and successful products. This story serves as a reminder that sometimes, to fit a square peg in a round hole, you need to think outside the box. #Innovation #Adaptation #Sony #SuccessStory #ThinkOutsideTheBox

QUESTION: In August 1955, Sony corporation, then known as *X* released the TR-55, Japan's first commercially produced transistor radio. In 1957, Sony came out with the TR-63 model, then the smallest (112 × 71 × 32 mm) transistor radio in commercial production. The TR-63 of 1957 cracked open the U.S. market and launched the new industry of consumer microelectronics." By the mid-1950s, American teens had begun buying portable transistor radios in huge numbers, helping to propel the fledgling industry from an estimated 100,000 units in 1955 to 5,000,000 units by the end of 1968. *What is X ?* (it might remind you of Sony's first commercial product in more ways than one - from a Southern Indian corporate entity context) *Which entity Y did Sony license the transistor technology from, in the early 1950s ?* *What is Y now called ?* *What very provocative (to Americans) tagline did Sony use to launch their first product in the USA ?*

End of an era for recordable Blu-ray... Sony is closing down production of recordable Blu-ray media. The last company in the world making those huge 100GB triple-layer and 128GB quad-layer BDXL discs is shutting its lines for good. In an interview recently, the company admitted it's going to gradually end development and production of recordable Blu-rays and other optical disc formats at its plants in Japan. That means 25GB BD-REs, 50GB BD-RE DLs, 100GB BD-RE XLs, and 128GB BD-R XLs will not be available to consumers. Professional discs for video production and optical archives for data storage are also being fazed out. The decision comes because the cold storage market never took off as hoped, and the storage media business has been operating in the red for years. However, the commercial Blu-ray discs used for movies and games will still be produced, although I’m not sure how long that will last, given the online direction both have gone. The Tagajo factory in Japan is the only place left able to #manufacture those massive 128GB quad-layer BDXL discs. The engineers were so dedicated, they kept developing new triple-layer disc #technology right after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit. Sony is offering up to 250 of the 670 employees at the plant voluntary early retirement packages. The shut-down date is unknown, but consumer disc sales will continue until current stocks run out at retailers, with B2B customers getting discs for a while longer. Now is the time to start stocking up on those BDXL blank discs and drives while you still can, if you use them for backing up data. Prices are going to skyrocket once supplies run thin. Sony introduced consumer recordable Blu-ray to market in 2003 with 25GB of space per disc. Over the next 15 years they crammed more and more data onto discs, hitting 50GB, then 100GB, and finally the 128GB BDXL format in 2018… Daily #electronics from Asia insights – follow me, Keesjan, and never miss a post by ringing my 🔔. #innovation
