The ISWA World Congress in Cape Town serves as a powerful reminder of the need for innovative waste management strategies. Key themes from the event include the urgency of closing down dumpsites, progressing towards a Circular Economy, and embracing technical innovations. The global waste challenge is intensifying, particularly in developing regions of the Global South, highlighting the necessity of applying global solutions with local context. Having been part of global waste management dialogues, it's clear how integral international cooperation is. Picture this: integrating a system that transforms waste into wealth, fostering sustainable futures. This isn't merely an aspiration but a requirement as waste generation is projected to hit 4 billion tons annually by 2050. Our willingness to share expertise and invest in robust infrastructure can drive this transition. 💡 How can we better support nations struggling with waste management? What steps should be prioritized in moving towards a Circular Economy? Your thoughts could spark a much-needed dialogue! 🌍 #WasteManagement #CircularEconomy #Innovation #GlobalSouth #SustainableFuture Looking forward to hearing your insights and experiences on this crucial issue!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 On December 14, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly publicly recognised the importance of zero-waste projects, designating #March30 as the International Day of Zero Waste, to be marked annually, and it started in 2023. The International Day of Zero Waste aims to advance Sustainable Development Goals 11 and 12, as these goals tackle all types of waste, such as food loss waste, natural resource extraction, and electronic waste, which contribute to the advancement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals. The Second Annual International Day of Zero Waste highlights the role of advancing resource recovery and reuse, which are key to protecting human and environmental health, and emphasises the importance of bolstering waste management globally and the need to promote sustainable consumption and production patterns by minimising and preventing waste generation. #InternationalDayofZeroWaste #BeatWastePollution #DCarbonGlobal #WasteManagement

Florian Lindl and I are delighted to share our most recent study "The crucial role of circular waste management systems in cutting waste leakage into aquatic environments" Nature Portfolio@Nature Communications. In this study, we adopted a waste systems perspective to identify hot spots of land-waste leakage, and determined which rivers, lakes, and coastal areas are particularly at risk, calling attention for urgent action. Our study shows that the majority of leakage of municipal solid waste into aquatic environments occurs in Africa, China, India, and South Asia. The supplement presents a list of rivers, lakes and coastal areas in which interventions must be prioritized. We show the need for the adoption of active mitigation strategies, in particular circular waste management systems, that could stop waste from entering the aquatic ecosystems in the first place. Actions like clean-ups are important measures to prevent waste from floating worldwide and to reduce the impact on marine life, but they won't solve the problem. Quote of the Moment: "NEMAs' work is to supervise and coordinate all matters environment. #WasteManagement is one key environmental issue, and for us to work we need policies which are already in place. We have the Sustainable Waste Management Policy (#SWMP2021) and Sustainable Waste Management Act (#SWMA2022). At the moment we do not have any gaps as our (SWMA2022) was put in place 2 years ago. The act brought a radical shift in waste management which requires us to transition towards zero waste. That brings us to the circular economy which requires us to recover as much waste as possible." - Dr Ayub Macharia, Director Environmental Enforcement, NEMA #KEPROinMedia #KEPROinAction #CircularEconomy #SustainableWasteManagement

Transitioning to a #circulareconomy has to be priority. And good things are being done to make this happen! The UN Environment Programme (in collaboration with ISWA International Solid Waste Association) recently published their Global Waste Management Outlook - essentially an updated report on the state of Global Waste. Two points struck me in particular - firstly, transitioning to a circular economy could save $100 billion annually in waste management costs for public authorities. Our single-use system is not only harming the planet, it's also incredibly expensive and unsustainable... and only going to cost more going forward! Secondly, the UN notes that 84% of studies into the benefits of the circular economy have been conducted on countries in the Global North, even as much of its waste is sent to countries in the Global South. We need more research to create a truly international and cooperative approach to waste management and the looming climate crisis. More research like this will catapult our industry to the next level! #wastemanagement #recycling
