“…too frequently, families of color are excluded from the credit-building cycle altogether. Black and Latinx people—especially those in low-income neighborhoods—are statistically more likely to be among the 26 million ‘credit invisible’ Americans, meaning they have no credit history with any nationwide reporting agencies… …Working primarily with low-income women of color, Grameen America, Inc. helps them build businesses by providing access to affordable credit, resources, and financial education. A core focus of its program is bridging the credit gap.” We're proud to support Grameen America! "In trust-based philanthropy, we have an imperative to look beyond operational practices. Without a systemic relational power analysis, “trust” is not going to have the impact that we want. Who funders think is worthy of trust and risk is limited by racism, sexism, xenophobia, and other forms of oppression that pervade our sector." - Solome Lemma, executive director, Thousand Currents Embracing a trust-based approach means ceding power and control, and in exchange, so much more becomes possible. Delve into the #TrustBasedStory, which talks about shifting power, impact, and trust as a process - not a destination. #TrustBasedPhilanthropy #FlashbackFriday #ShiftThePower

A super interesting read 🤓 Caught in a perfect storm of a climate emergency, a global pandemic, and widening inequality, Canadians are realizing that many social contracts on which our societies rely have been broken, contributor Gloria Novovic wrote in this popular 2022 article. In this broader ecosystem of societal transformation, Canadian philanthropy is on a path toward a “just transition” that requires more deliberate efforts to abandon false hierarchies, modernize charitable legislative and regulatory frameworks, and co-construct new visions for anti-racist, justice-oriented, and solidarity-based agendas. Philanthropy can do more to support power shifting, racial equity, and community voice, and partnering with intermediaries is a key way to achieve these goals. A new report explores how intermediaries can transform from transactional agents to agents of transformation that advance power-building and racial equity. The report offers valuable insights for program staff looking to make important decisions about when and how to work with intermediaries. Let's work together to create a more equitable and just world. #RacialEquity #Funders #Learning

Entrepreneurship, in all shapes and forms, can offer a meaningful pathway to independence and well-being for women and gender-diverse individuals, especially those facing multiple barriers and impacted by injustices. Their contributions and successes ultimately contribute to a healthier, more equal society! Through our core program, the Change Make-Her, we aim to bridge the gap for women and gender-diverse individuals with entrepreneurial motivations and skills—guiding through foundational economic-readiness workshops in a community-centric low-barrier space. We couldn’t have done this without our powerful small team, volunteers, collaborators, and participants, who all help create a safer, supportive, intersectional, connected, and compassionate environment. Swipe to hear from our team on what they’re most proud of. _______ #GoodtobeGood #GTBG #advocacynonprofit #marginalization #entrepreneurship #womeninbusiness #BIPOC #WOC #businessowner #communitybuilding #np #nonprofit #programming #programs

New blog post from me: Memo to Jon Shell: Not everything is "Sexism" A Clout-Hunting "economic justice activist" throws a Molotov cocktail my way. Why is it that the very same people who want us all to “rise above it” are also the first to hurl unsupported epithets the moment they are on the losing end of a public policy argument? Prior to Budget 2024, despite my decades in-and-around the early-stage business, I’d not heard of Jon Shell. I’ve come to learn that he was once part of some Vet Clinic roll-ups in Australia and Canada, and even tried his hand at U.S. Angel investing before joining Social Capital Partners. SCP seems to be a venturey-type fund designed To-Do-Good. According to the Toronto-based firm’s website, SCP’s last deal was in early 2021. In that instance, Canadian-founded SCP helped an American guitar manufacturer transition ownership to its Californian employee base. A victory for economic justice, apparently: Employee ownership within the Capitalist system! I’d have thought this concept was more widespread in North America than the SCP press release would imply, but I admire the marketing zeal.
