Why is Pegasus outsourcing its labor-intensive aircraft maintenance to Bulgaria when so many aviation-focused high schools and vocational schools are opening in Turkey? Pegasus started flying in 1990 and switched to a low-cost model in 2005, and in 2012, they made a huge investment by ordering nearly 100 new Airbus A320neo and A321neo planes to update their fleet. But despite all of this, they haven’t invested in building a strong domestic MRO capability. Instead, they’re sending work abroad. So why hasn’t Pegasus developed its own MRO facilities here at home? With a growing number of trained graduates coming out of local schools, it seems like a missed opportunity. Is it purely about cutting costs, or is there hesitation about trusting local talent? These are questions that both Pegasus and the government organisations need to answer. If we’re investing in schools to support the aviation industry, why isn’t there a parallel effort to strengthen local MRO capabilities?
