‘Hero’ crew of ship which hit Baltimore Key Bridge saved lives by sounding mayday alarm moments before impact Whether this headline tells the entire story about the crews' actions during this tragic accident is yet to be seen, but their quick thinking to make a mayday call undoubtedly saved lives. Whilst the investigation will aim to discover what caused the incident, there is one clear lesson we can all take note of right now - The speed at which an everyday routine event can so quickly turn into an extreme and dangerous situation. The way to mitigate against the impact of a dangerous emergency occurring is through TRAINING TRAINING TRAINING! It has been proven time and time again that there is no substitute for having a well-trained crew, and it is simply too late when things start to go wrong. Finally, whilst any learning points from this accident must be highlighted, it is also important to recognise that 6 people lost their lives when the bridge collapsed. Our thoughts and condolences are with their families at this difficult time. #seafarers #maritime #superyacht #superyachts #yachtcrew #yachtcaptain #captain #maritimeindustry #marineindustry #shipmanagement #mentalhealthmatters #shipping #leadershipdevelopment #yacht #yachting #yachtlife #megayacht #Captains #superyachtindustry #boat #superyachts #yachtcharter #sailing #yachtworld #boating #boats #motoryacht #yachtlifestyle #megayachts #yachtcrew #yachtinglifestyle #yachtie #superyachtlife #ocean #luxuryyachts #yachtinglife https://lnkd.in/e8pMuzcY

Did you know that overloading a boom lift can turn it from a worksite hero into a safety hazard villain? Here's why understanding weight capacity limits is crucial: Each boom lift has a specific load chart that details the maximum weight it can safely handle at different outreach distances and heights. Exceeding these limits can lead to tipping, structural damage, unstable operations, and potentially dangerous conditions for your crew. So make sure you know the load chart, understand weight capacity limits, and properly train for safety. #DidYouKnow #BoomLiftSafety #AccessEquipmentSafety #MythVsFact #Platform

LET'S TALK ABOUT MAN OVERBOARD! Man overboard is a phrase used in emergency situations on ships or boats to signal that someone has fallen into the water. When this happens, the crew must act quickly to rescue the person, following specific safety procedures. Here are the key aspects related to the term and the actions taken in a "man overboard" scenario: Emergency Procedures 1. Immediate alert : Anyone who witnesses the incident should shout "Man overboard!" to alert the rest of the crew and mark the location where the person fell. 2. Mark the location : Throw a flotation device, such as a life ring or buoy, to the person in the water and immediately activate a location marker (if available), such as a buoy with light or smoke. 3. Reduce the boat's speed : The captain or person in charge of navigation should slow down and maneuver the vessel to approach the person while keeping a constant watch on them. 4. Maintain visual contact : It's crucial that someone keeps the person in view, pointing toward them throughout the rescue process. 5. Rescue : Depending on the sea conditions and the location of the person, different rescue methods may be employed, such as deploying lifeboats, nets, or hoisting systems. The priority is to get the person out of the water quickly and safely. Associated Risks - Hypothermia : In cold waters, the risk of hypothermia is high, and rescue time should be minimized. - Drowning : The sea state, visibility, and the person's ability to stay afloat are critical factors. - Disorientation : Both the person in the water and the crew can become disoriented due to rough seas, making it harder to locate and rescue the individual. Proper crew training in "man overboard" situations is essential to ensure a quick and effective response.
