During her pregnancy, Rachel learned Blake would be born with a cleft lip and palate. As a speech therapist, she knew this could affect his eating, speaking, and ear health. After consulting with experts, Blake had successful surgeries at four months and later for ear tubes and palate repair. These surgeries included the innovative use of donor skin to help reconstruct his lip and palate, ensuring better functional and aesthetic outcomes. Rachel captured Blake’s pre-surgery smile in photos, knowing his appearance would change. Today, Blake is healthy and happy with his two brothers. In honor of National Cleft and Craniofacial Awareness Month, let’s raise awareness and support for families affected by cleft conditions. #NationalCleftandCraniofacialAwareness #DonateLife

Relieving Post-Breastfeeding Stiffness: Breastfeeding is a beautiful bonding experience between mother and child. But sometimes it can also lead to stiffness and discomfort. The prolonged sitting and holding positions during nursing sessions can strain muscles and lead to stiffness to neck shoulders and back. However, incorporating simple stretching exercises into your daily routine can alleviate these issues. To prevent stiffness, mothers can do gentle stretching exercises targeting the neck, shoulders, and back. Neck stretches, shoulder stretches, and chest openers are effective in releasing tension and improving flexibility. These exercises can be done before, during, and after breastfeeding sessions to maintain comfort and mobility. Few yogasans like Cat and cow pose (Marjarasana) , Cobra pose (Bhujangasana),Puppy pose are excellent streches and very effective in reliving the Stiffness. Additionally, changing positions can help prevent stiffness. Alternating nursing positions and using supportive pillows or cushions can also reduce strain on muscles and joints. It’s essential for breastfeeding mothers to prioritize self-care by doing so, they can enjoy the beautiful moments of breastfeeding without the discomfort of stiffness, ensuring a positive experience for both mother and child.

Although it is a natural activity, breastfeeding is also a skill that takes time to learn. It tends to get easier with practice, as both a woman and baby master the breastfeeding strategies that work for them. The best breastfeeding positions enable a baby to latch on to the breast well and comfortably, do not strain the muscles, and reduce the risk of nipple injuries and pain. #breastfeeding #motherhood #motherlove #linkedin #linkedinvideos #gynaecologist #gynaecology

Today’s post is directed at doctors and nurses who largely determine how the first hour looks like for a newborn. The Golden Hour is the first 60minutes of life. If you’ve ever been in a Labour ward at about that time, you know how active it can get. Still, it’s important that the basics are still done and one of those is establishing breastfeeding. As a doctor, I know first-hand the dangers of neonatal hypoglycemia and with under-experienced eyes, it can come across as having a “calm baby”. While things get very busy in the Labour ward and the temptation to grab the baby, clean and leave under the warmer is very palpable, it’s important we remember how vital skin-to-skin contact is for our baby’s health and overall wellbeing. Breastfeeding in the Golden Hour is vital for Newborn survival and helps increase the likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding. It helps reduce the risk of PPH and helps in establishing a bond between mother and child. #breastfeeding #ibclc #lactationsupport #lactation #kmc
