Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) ♻️♻️♻️ The greenest and leanest terminal in the United States. This fully electrified terminal moves 20K+ Vessels in and out in less than 3 days and Trucks in and out in less an 40 minutes. It also has a dedicated on dock rail service. Located in Long Beach at the Port of Long Beach (POLB) LBCT has realized it's powerful vision to become Net Zero, to improve the air quality in the region and to thrive economically by going from 700,000 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent) in 2015 to 3.3 Million TEU capacity. Over 100 zero emissions automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that are battery powered travel between the vessels and the stacking cranes moving the containers from ship to their destination on trucks and or rail. Trucks drop off and pick up containers in less than an hour, the shortest time documented in the country by Harbor Trucking Association. || Messaging Is Key || Getting the train into work this morning (my preferred mode of transport), it was intriguing to hear the overhead announcement messaging. "...No major delays and no cancellations this morning." It strikes me as a negative way to announce trains are running to schedule. The message is effectively let's passengers know that they've avoid negative events, so far! So why not flip the messaging to advice passengers that "trains are running to schedule this morning." ? Thus focusing on the positives for passengers and portraying a positive interaction with public transit. Optimizing Passenger Distribution in Indian Railways: A Thoughtful Suggestion PROBLEM : In the Indian railway system, general compartments are typically divided between the front and rear of the train, with 2-3 bogies allocated to each end. A common issue that arises is uneven occupancy, where passengers tend to crowd into the front bogies while the rear ones remain relatively underutilized. SOLUTION : To address this, I propose a solution that involves installing real-time weighing mechanisms in each bogie. By integrating this data with apps like IRCTC or Where Is My Train, passengers can see the real-time weight distribution of each bogie. This information would help them make informed decisions about which compartment to choose, leading to a more balanced and comfortable travel experience. This simple yet effective solution could enhance passenger comfort, reduce overcrowding, and optimize the use of available space on trains. Train v Plane: the reality. New research from Rail Delivery Group reveals that it’s 17 times better for the planet to take an London North Eastern Railway train instead of flying from London to Edinburgh. That should be enough of a reason, but there’s more. How about price? When you compare the real cost - including getting to the airport and the additional charges for luggage on a plane, rail wins again. Finally - how about speed? When you factor in getting to the airport and checking in, rail wins yet again - research shows the train will get you to Edinburgh from London 20 mins earlier than if you fly - the saving from London to Newcastle is more than 2 hours. Ocean Network Express visit Port of Liverpool. The Port of Liverpool recently hosted senior executives from Ocean Network Express UK. As well as an extensive tour of the Port facilities, we discussed the potential for the Port of Liverpool to support ONE's strategy of sustainable growth, simplifying ONE customers’ supply chain across the four pillars of #Accessibility, #Cost, #Carbon and #Congestion. Loading and discharging cargo near to its origin or final destination creates significant benefit towards supply chain certainty and resilience by reducing the risk of delay from congested UK road and rail networks. Lower overall transportation cost and lower carbon emissions are also achieved when short haul cargo deliveries replace the long journeys required to deliver from southern ports into the northern UK hinterland. What Is An ETP? An Equal Time Point (ETP) is a geographical location along a flight route where the time it would take to reach a certain airport is the same as the time it would take to reach an alternative airport. A simple example is an ETP between your departure and destination airports. When you pass this ETP you know it’s quicker to continue to your destination than it is to turn around and return to your point of departure. A more complex use of ETPs may be used to define the point between 2 enroute diversion airports, for example when crossing an ocean where suitable airports may be hundreds of miles apart. When one ETP is passed, the next one can be calculated using another airport pair, so you’ll always know the best diversion option wherever you are along your route.

There is so much wisdom to consider in this post. Greater connectivity, along with equity in mobility, can be achieved. But we have to be willing to apply a growth mindset and approach the possibilities by being open to planning, thinking and organizing our networks differently - with human-centered design principles. Rather than perpetuating business as usual, around automobile-centric thinking, at the expense of every other mode of transportation. Not only will our planet thank us, but health, quality of life and human potential will all improve as a result.
