If we're going to take advantage of the huge investment in trains, metro lines and light rail across Sydney, the first step has to be designing bus services that feed passengers onto the rail lines >> https://lnkd.in/gJe2EcdW The next step, and what's really needed, is a whole-of-bus-network review and optimisation for Sydney, to make sure our public transport modes are complementing each other - not competing.   Optimising bus services when new rail lines open would mean some buses can be redeployed and used to increase the frequency of other services in the network - without additional investment in the bus fleet.   To make this work, buses connecting to rail need to run frequently enough that it's easy to travel across multiple modes - whether it's bus, tram, train or any other form of transport. London Northwestern Railway proposes new #Manchester to #London train services London Northwestern Railway has unveiled proposals to run new train services between Manchester, the West Midlands and London #Euston. It said that the plans are designed to improve connectivity between the Midlands and the North West, as well as providing more choice for passengers. Under the proposals, London Northwestern Railway’s existing services between London Euston and Crewe would be extended through to Manchester Victoria and the current services between Stafford and Crewe would be extended to #ManchesterAirport. The services linking Manchester city centre to London would use the operator’s brand-new Class 730 electric trains, which are manufactured in the Midlands by Alstom and will provide a significant increase in capacity, with each 10-car train able to carry more than 1,200 passengers. The proposal will see London Northwestern Railway working with local operators and Network Rail to determine the best overall solution, tying in with planned upgrades to Manchester Victoria station, the TransPennine route upgrade and other local improvements in the North West. Ian McConnell, managing director of West Midlands Trains, operator of London Northwestern Railway, said: “This proposal puts passengers at the heart of the railway and is the common sense solution to increase connectivity between the North West and the West Midlands following the cancellation of the northern leg of HS2.” Dominic Booth, chief executive officer of WMT’s parent company, Transport UK Group, said: “Our new service proposals represent a significant step forward in enhancing the rail network between Manchester and London. “By leveraging the new Class 730 electric trains, we will provide greater capacity and comfort for customers travelling to Manchester while also supporting the local economy by creating new job opportunities in the North West. This proposal aligns with our commitment to delivering efficient, sustainable, and customer-focused rail services across the UK.” In addition to the economic benefits of generating additional revenue and enhancing connectivity between two of the UK’s largest city regions, the operator said the new services would also create new train crew and management jobs in the North West. London Northwestern Railway will formally submit its plans to the Office for Rail and Road (ORR) later this year. For the first time in 22 years, new trains have been introduced to the Lisbon Metro, and they carry a significant distinction. FirstGroup plc applies to launch new rail service between #London and #Rochdale FirstGroup plc has announced that it plans to launch a new #rail service between Rochdale and London, expanding its open access operations as part of its successful #Lumo business. The move would enable passengers to travel directly between the two destinations for the first time in nearly 25 years. The leading private sector transport operator has submitted the first phase of an application for the new open access train service to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). It said it hopes to build on Lumo’s existing service, which has transformed long-distance connectivity between London and #Edinburgh and helped support a growth in passenger numbers for all operators on the East Coast Mainline. All of the trains on FirstGroup’s new route will be electric and battery powered, and the service will be operated by brand new #trains built in the UK. FirstGroup’s proposal for six return journeys a day aims to restore a direct Rochdale to London link via Manchester Victoria which last ran in the year 2000. The trains will run from Rochdale to London Euston, calling at Manchester Victoria, Eccles, Newton-le-Willows and Warrington Bank Quay. The station at Eccles provides connectivity for other parts of the City of Salford, including the fast-growing MediaCity area, via the nearby interchange with Metrolink and services to Newton-le-Willows will deliver greater rail connectivity for St Helens. It is estimated that this new service would provide 1.6m people in the North West with a convenient and competitively priced direct rail service to London from stations that are more local to them, helping to stimulate a shift in transport mode from coach and car travel to rail. FirstGroup Chief Executive Officer, Graham Sutherland said: “We have extensive experience of running open access rail operations and we want to bring our successful Lumo service to this new route that connects Rochdale and London. We have seen the level of growth and opportunity that is possible with open access, as well as the positive effect it has on the wider market, including economic and environmental benefits” FirstGroup has submitted a formal application to the Office of Rail and Road (ORR). A consultation period will now follow, as well as discussion with Network Rail to secure the required approvals. Melbourne Airport Breakthrough: Above-Ground Rail Station Secured for $5 Billion Project! After years of debate, Melbourne Airport has agreed to support the Victorian government’s plan for an above-ground railway station at Tullamarine. This decision marks the end of a prolonged standoff, paving the way for the much-anticipated rail link to Melbourne Airport. The standoff began over differing visions for the station's construction. Melbourne Airport initially advocated for an underground station, emphasising future-proofing and freeing up space for a third runway. Conversely, the Victorian government argued for an above-ground station, citing lower costs and faster completion times. Despite the impasse, the state government submitted a business case in 2022 for the above-ground option, targeting a 2029 opening. However, this plan was delayed by four years in May 2024, with the government even considering Avalon Airport as an alternative location if no agreement was reached. In a significant shift, Melbourne Airport’s CEO, Lorie Argus, announced the airport’s willingness to compromise. “Victorians have waited long enough for an airport rail line,” Argus said. “With an estimated 45 million travelers a year predicted once the third runway opens, the rail link will support a massive increase in passenger numbers and billions of dollars in additional economic activity for Victoria.” The decision reflects a pragmatic approach to enhance transport options and support Melbourne Airport’s growth. The new rail link is expected to handle the increasing passenger numbers and the expanding airport workforce. The third runway project will further facilitate this growth, reducing delays and offering more flight options, ultimately exerting downward pressure on air fares. Melbourne Airport is eager to resume discussions with the state government, with a focus on the station’s design to ensure it meets the needs of future travelers. Despite the recent progress, the government has indicated that the lack of previous movement on the project may push the opening date to 2033. Northern Powerhouse Rail link between Liverpool and Manchester progresses The next steps of development for the Liverpool to Manchester section of Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) have been announced following extensive engagement with local leaders and MPs. This latest iteration identifies a primary route option serving both Warrington Bank Quay and Manchester Airport, broadly confirming the previously proposed route. Northern Powerhouse Rail aims to be a catalyst for economic growth across the North by transforming east-west transport links and better connecting people to work, education and business opportunities. Once delivered, passengers will benefit from quicker, more frequent services, which could see journey times cut by around a third, meaning the route between Liverpool and Manchester Piccadilly would be reduced from around 50 minutes to 35 minutes. And with more frequent services it will also mean passengers are able to turn up and go, knowing the next train will only be 10 to 15 minutes away. Capacity could also be trebled between Liverpool and Leeds, offering 2,100 extra seats per hour in each direction.
