One of our Medical Advisory Board Members is Dr. Jafri, from Henry Ford Heath. He is a specialist in Gastroenterology, Transplant Hepatology. We asked him: "Are Intestinal Failure, Intestinal Rehab patients eligible to donate blood?" His answer: "Patients with acute intestinal failure should not donate. For stable patients with adequate intestinal rehabilitation, there is no formal guidance on blood donation. It should be individualized. If a patient is medically stable, on stable fluid or nutritional support and has a normal hemoglobin and iron profile then donation can be considered with the approval of a physician." On 1 April, the Supply of Information about Transplants Regulations 2024 came into force. The Regulations were introduced by government under section 34 of the Human Tissue Act 2004. They require relevant clinicians in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who work closely with patients that need, or have received, an organ transplant to report the following information to the HTA: - if they have a reasonable suspicion that an organ donation and transplantation related offence may have been committed under the Human Tissue Act or Modern Slavery legislation, or - if they are made aware that a patient has received an organ transplant outside the UK. Failing to report under the Regulations is an offence, and clinicians risk criminal charges amounting to a fine for failing to report, or an unlimited fine for providing false or misleading information. The GUT-PARFECT trial, a single-centre randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted at Ghent University Hospital. Participants (aged 50–65 years, Hoehn and Yahr stage 2) were randomly assigned to receive nasojejunal FMT with either healthy donor stool or their own stool. After 12 months, the MDS-UPDRS motor score significantly improved by a mean of 5.8 points (95% CI −11.4 to −0.2) in the healthy donor group and by 2.7 points (−8.3 to 2.9) in the placebo group (p = 0.0235).

April 19th is #WorldLiverDay and the A-TANGO consortium stands for the continued and necessary fight against acute-on-chronic liver failure (#ACLF). At the moment, there are barely any treatment options for patients suffering from late-stage #cirrhosis, a condition that is responsible for approximately 2.4% of the deaths worldwide (per year) and can have various causes - including bacterial or viral #infections, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and alcohol abuse.  Currently, up to 40% of patients who come to the hospital with decompensated cirrhosis (interpretable as an acute phase of ACLF) succumb to the disease and die. A-TANGO strives to increase the survival rate of these patients with "G-TAK", a novel, #CombinatorialTherapy. Also, 30% of ACLF patients recover only partially, remaining in need of expensive long-term care. By improving the percentage of patients recovering fully, A-TANGO also aims to decrease the burden on the national #HealthcareSystems.
