🔬 Exciting Discovery in Blood Transfusion Science! 🔬 Researchers have made a significant breakthrough in the field of blood transfusion science. A team from DTU and Lund University has discovered enzymes that can transform A and B antigens to generate ABO-universal blood. The gut symbiont Akkermansia muciniphila can degrade mucin O-glycans including ABO epitopes. The team evaluated 23 Akkermansia glycosyl hydrolases and identified exoglycosidase combinations which efficiently transformed both A and B antigens. This discovery could revolutionize blood transfusions, simplifying blood logistics and preventing ABO-mismatched transfusions.
