I’m a great believer in setting your mission and vision statement. Whether you have a personal goal or a company goal, it’s important to communicate it. Only then can you take identifiable steps towards it. At Fuzzy we truly identify with our values and we will continue to check in on them to make sure they represent who we are. Do you think setting a mission and values help achieve your goals?

In today’s Sunday Times Charlotte I. is standing up for the right for the Garrick and others to hold onto their ‘daft’ choices. And she makes this point: if we all chip away at everything that makes us unique (even that stuff which means some people wouldn’t want to join us, even if they could) we’ll become a rather bland homogeneous bunch. In her article she has a dig at ‘values’ (attached) and I 100% agree with the point she is making. There are a lot of samey values about the place. I often joke (though sadly it’s a truth) that I can date organisational values, if they’re the wrong ones. They tend to reflect social trends and use current buzzwords from the time of a board retreat. (Side note: a board retreat is not the time to agree on your values.) Our values are best served honest. Values which are chosen to please others, to fit ourselves into a different shaped hole, are not ours. They will neither stand up to scrutiny nor help us make decisions in challenging times. Yes, our values should set high expectations. We choose them to support excellence. I do not believe we should be able to achieve them all the time (because they are designed to stretch us).
