A startling survey conducted by the British Airline Pilots Association (Balpa) has revealed that 60% of commercial pilots have admitted to falling asleep while flying, with 29% waking up to find their co-pilot asleep as well. This alarming statistic has resurfaced amid recent engineering failures in commercial airplanes, notably Boeing models. The survey of 500 pilots highlighted that 43% felt their ability to fly safely was compromised by tiredness at least once a month, and 49% identified tiredness as the biggest threat to flight safety. The issue of pilot fatigue, exacerbated by demanding schedules and time zone traversing, has gained wider recognition as a critical safety risk in the aviation industry. There are three important subjects in a modern cockpit. 1-Hardware 2-Software 3-Wetware (the crew). All three need an infrastructure to operate in, and the airliners brought efficiency to this system, which the private aircraft sectors are playing catch up with (lagging seriously). The GA/BA Crew has many distractions at the apron, for example, handling, fueling, flight planning, contingency planning, hotel, transportation, credit cards, and then the boss.
