Dammam Sets a New Benchmark in Road Safety The city of Dammam, in collaboration with Euro Group for Engineering Consultancy, proudly launches Saudi Arabia’s first iRAP Pilot Project for road safety. A significant step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure and saving lives.

Ignition causes a release of flammable liquid or gas to become a fire (jet fire, flash fire, pool fire etc.) or explosion.  There are many possible sources of ignition and those that are most likely will depend on the release scenario. Sources of ignition include  electrical sparks, static electricity,  naked flames, hot surfaces, impact, friction, etc.

My colleague Tom de Nooij just came back from a five-day training program in Dubai, organised by our partner NAFFCO. The sessions focused on two key NFPA standards: NFPA 20 (Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection) and NFPA 25 (Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems). The training brought together fire safety experts, consultants, insurers, and civil defence representatives from across the region, including Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The engagement and interaction from the participant were amazing; everybody asked detailed questions and shared positive feedback about the program’s content and approach. “For Riskonet Academy, these sessions are an excellent opportunity to both share and acquire knowledge,” says Tom. “For example, we gain a deeper understanding on how fire safety is managed in Dubai’s high-rise buildings. This knowledge isn’t just useful in the Middle East; it gives us a broader perspective on fire safety standards worldwide”. During the courses, Tom has the chance to explore local regulations and identify both the similarities and differences with Dutch legislation. “This helps us build a broader global knowledge base and better understand where local laws overlap, but also where they differ,” he explains. These insights are invaluable and are integrated into Tom’s daily practice. Our collaboration with NAFFCO plays a big role in the success of these training sessions. Together, we’re helping to spread fire safety knowledge and improve practices worldwide. A recent tragedy, where a civil protection officer lost his life while responding to a fire in an archive warehouse of CNAM , underscores the critical need for improved safety in storage facilities. This incident reflects the severe consequences of inadequate risk prevention measures. Key Actions to Take: -Conduct Thorough Risk Assessments in storage areas, particularly those with flammable materials. -Enforce Safety Standards rigorously, with adequate protective gear, functional fire detection systems, and clear evacuation protocols. -Train and Inform Staff and intervention teams on site-specific hazards and emergency procedures. -Schedule Regular Compliance Audits to identify and address potential safety gaps. As safety professionals, we must prioritize these measures to protect both assets and lives.
