Sport England Launches £45 Million Initiative to Combat Climate Change Sport England has unveiled its inaugural sustainability strategy, dubbed "Every Move," committing £45 million to environmental projects to foster climate action and bolster resilience against extreme weather. Premier League clubs have established a new environmental sustainability commitment… Currently, six Premier League clubs openly disclose some or all of their carbon footprint: 👉 Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, and Crystal Palace. This new commitment includes: ⚽ Developing a sustainability policy ⚽ Designating a senior employee for environmental activities ⚽ Creating a greenhouse gas emissions dataset ⚽ Supporting a common framework for action. "They say golf is like life, but I don't believe them golf is more complicated than that." - Gardner Dickinson I am a big believer in the impact which Sustainability practices can have upon a business, especially in the current climate of ESG legislation and Sustainable Finance requirements. A lot of my work is focussed upon winning contracts within the Leisure & Hospitality space, so this is an area I take a lot of interest in. I have seen some great content recently on LinkedIn from many in the industry such as England Golf GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf EIGCA - European Institute of Golf Course Architects Abama Resort Tenerife and Global Sustainable Sport amongst others. The focus for many golf clubs ⛳ remains upon: 🏌♂️ improving efficiency 🏌♀️ reducing operating costs 🏌♂️ enhancing their courses 🏌♀️ minimising environmental impact 🏌♂️ extending connection to their community There seems to be a real focus on this at the moment, which is great to see, especially when we are seeing the effects of climate change - heat & drought stress, access to irrigation water, erosion and flooding as examples. A lot of the success probably comes down to the sustainability strategy developed by England Golf and British Association for Sustainable Sport which includes: ✅ Energy & Emissions ✅ Waste Management ✅ Water Resources ✅ Accessibility & Equality ✅ Economy & Community All of this means that there is an established framework for golf clubs to work towards, where they understand what success looks like across their industry. Demand for serious environmental action in sport grows from within the industry ⚽️🌱 Sport England, a leading public body promoting sports and physical activity in England, has recently released their 2024 Sustainability Strategy and Action Plan. The report unveils a standout finding after consulting with 475 industry players from across Great Britain: 82% of respondents want their organisations to be more ambitious on environmental sustainability. These industry participants identified the following key areas for improvement: ▶ Travel: Reducing carbon emissions from travel. ▶ Facilities: Cutting energy consumption and carbon emissions. ▶ Circular economy: Minimising waste from kit, equipment, and operations. ▶ Water: Enhancing water quality and managing water-related challenges. ▶ Climate adaptation: Building resilience against extreme weather.
