Today, we want to zoom in on one child’s story. Your generosity secured hope for Maya*: Seven-year-old Maya faced hardships no child should have to endure at that age. Her father’s death left her mother to navigate survival for the young family on her own. A pivotal moment came when a job opportunity opened up in our school. Maya’s mother was hired for the position, which gave Maya access to the programs we offer to children of vulnerable women. Seek balance. 🧘 There are a lot of things that we hold in tension as fundraisers... Two things, for me, are: balancing the programmatic/financial needs of a #nonprofit against the stories/offers that resonate with #donors (and raise funds). Sometimes—who am I kidding... a lot of times—program needs are in contrast to what donors want to support. e.g. Your nonprofit needs to advocate for UBI and other poverty relief measures, whereas donors want to feed families/children that are hungry. Both have a place. Both are necessary. I think where we get into trouble as an industry is when we fail to be thoughtful about the stories we share, the offers we present, and the report-backs that are too thin or never happen at all. Advocating for UBI is important. It's also a complicated subject to communicate in an email or direct mail. Feeding hungry kids is important, too. That's a simple problem with a simple solution. But it also doesn't address the root causes of why our neighbours lack access to affordable, nutritious food. What I'm trying to say here is: program work is complicated, long-term, and (we hope) focused on sustainable positive change. Direct response #fundraising should be simple, focused, easily understood, and help donors (en masse) achieve a goal. Seek balance. 🧘
