As I'm about to celebrate my 5-year work anniversary at Amala, I couldn't be more thrilled to be sharing Amala's Strategic Plan for 2024-2027 "Expanding Hope". This year, the number of displaced people globally rose to 120 million from 60 million back in 2017, when Amala was founded. 🌍 Our mission is bold but urgent—to enable millions of refugee and conflict-affected youth to access transformative education by 2040.🌍 As Amala's Co-Founders Polly and Mia explain, "Over the last three years, Amala has evolved as a pioneer in post-primary education for displaced youth. Through powerful partnerships, predominantly with refugee-led organisations, we have multiplied our impact—growing from serving 200 students annually to 1,500. The Global Secondary Diploma became the first accredited upper secondary education programme specifically for refugee youth. "When I work with the children at Abraham’s Oasis in Tigray, Ethiopia. I see myself in them. This is home for me, actually. I was left outside of a hospital in Tigray as a baby and named after a doctor volunteering there, Carlos. I lived in the hospital until I was 10. Then I came to Abraham’s Oasis, a sanctuary for children orphaned or abandoned due to conflict in the region. Abraham’s Oasis has given me a family and the chance to finish my education. It’s given me a better future than I would’ve had at the hospital—or almost anywhere else. And now, I’m committed to its future and children like me. In Shire, Tigray, more than 1 million people displaced by conflict face uncertain futures. Abraham’s Oasis offers them hope. We provide temporary shelter to children and work to reunite them with their families. We understand the situation. We know what it feels like to lose loved ones to the very same conflict. So our work continues no matter what. Worldwide, about 43.3 million children have been displaced by conflict and violence. They each deserve safety, support, and the chance to create their own bright future. And local nonprofits that listen to and understand their communities can help them do that best.
