This Year’s Annual Fund Appeal, "Building Our Hawks' Tomorrows, Today" provides Choices for Directing Your Gifts. As you are probably well aware, tuition revenue does not cover the full cost of providing the transformational Lasallian educational experience for our 500 Hawks. To address this ever-present need, we are highlighting six options for designating your gifts as they ar e made to this year’s Fund for Hudson Catholic. We think that donors might prefer to have more specific choices toward which to designate the use of their gifts. Tuition Assistance, STEM Education, The Arts, and General Operations are all items to be found in our annual operating budget, whereas two other options -- Student Retreats and Air Conditioning the Gym (for year-round use and new revenue generation) -- are aimed at addressing some pressing needs that never seem to make it into the budget, therefore go unaddressed. "The United Negro College Fund, which represents private historically Black colleges and universities, received $100 million from the Lilly Endowment, a foundation focused on religion, education and community development. The gift is the largest unrestricted private grant in UNCF’s history, according to a press release from the organization. Michael Lomax, president of UNCF, said in the release that the money will go toward a pooled endowment for 37 HBCUs. The endowment is a part of a $1 billion capital campaign by UNCF focused on the long-term financial stability of HBCUs and scholarships for their students. UNCF seeks to raise $370 million for the endowment in total. The $100 million gift alone will increase each institution’s endowment by $2.7 million; that would at least double the endowments of several institutions. HBCUs typically have much smaller endowments than predominantly white institutions. The median endowment for a UNCF member institution is $15.9 million, research from UNCF’s Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute shows. The median private college endowment is $214.6 million, according to data from the National Association of College and University Business Officers." https://lnkd.in/dZ4UdUuQ

For too long, HBCUs have been systemically underfunded—by billions of dollars—despite producing promising outcomes for Black students at rates on par with or better than higher-resourced predominantly white institutions. Yvette Escobar, and student interns are spending year after year to grow the College Promise movement in 450 local communities and 37 states. That’s why we’re over-the-top thrilled to see Michael Bloomberg donating to Johns Hopkins University to provide free tuition to all medical students from families earning up to $300,000 a year AND room and board and fees for students whose families earn $175,000 or less. Johns Hopkins now is the fourth free/tuition medical school, following NYU, WashU-St.Louis, and Albert Einstein. Now imagine local students from underserved communities knowing that their community college and/university’s undergraduate College Promise will be there if they aspire to become a doctor or nurse! WASHINGTON POST 7-9-24 Higher Education $1 billion gift to make Johns Hopkins medical school free for most students. The donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies will also expand financial aid for the school’s other graduate programs, including nursing and public health.

🎯Top US universities like Georgetown, Stanford and Yale have agreed to pay $166 million to settle a lawsuit accusing them of illegally favoring wealthy students. 🎯The class action lawsuit said schools conspired with each other to use unfair admissions practices that favored wealthy, privileged applicants. 🎯The plaintiffs argued schools favored students whose families could afford sizeable donations and give preferential treatment to the children of alumni. 🎯As part of the settlement, the universities did not acknowledge any wrongdoing but agreed to make admissions practices more transparent. 🎯Over 170,000 students who applied to these universities will be eligible for payouts from the settlement fund. 🎯The settlement aims to increase opportunities for disadvantaged applicants through revised admissions processes, scholarships, and recruiting.

The new gift from Mr. Bloomberg will mean that nearly 2/3 rds of medical students who currently attend Johns Hopkins or who will enter programs at the university soon will be eligible for Free Tuition or Both Free Tuition and Living Expenses, according to the university. This is Not the first large contribution to Johns Hopkins from Mr. Bloomberg, who routinely makes donations toward the arts, education, the environment and public health. Bloomberg Philanthropies made a $ 1.8 Billion donation to the university in 2018 as part of an effort to ensure that undergraduate students would be accepted by the university regardless of their family’s income. #education #universities #america #bloomberg #newyorktimes
