„Courage to innovate leads to economic success“   Leading SMEs in their sectors, such as the automation specialist Murrelektronik, form the backbone of the German economy. During a visit to the company, Baden-Württemberg's Minister of Economic Affairs Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut found out about the latest trends in the field of automation technology – and was impressed by the company's very own ideas that are currently globally creating a furor once again.   Uli Viethen (CEO), Jürgen Erkert (CFO) and Gaby Linnow (CSO) focused their attention on the latest developments such as the revolutionary “Vario-X” cabinet-free automation system, with which the company is once again successfully breaking new ground and causing a sensation, or the digital platform “uKonn-X”, which makes machine installation and maintenance child's play. The digital twin; from a follower to a forerunner of reality.   Last Tuesday, March 19, I attended a congress of the Industry Forum 2024 in Augsburg, organized by Cadenas. The venue was the FC Augsburg soccer stadium, which did not yet host the kickoff of the WM but did kick off the digitization of design and logistics. For the organizing software company Cadenas, the Corona period was an occasion to put extra effort into the development of the digital twin because digitalization on the shop floor was at a standstill. With the complete development of a digital twin for a production plant, a model was created based on which the actual plant could be built. In this way, the digital twin went from being an imitator of reality to a designer of reality. This two-day Forum offered dozens of companies two stages to highlight the digital twin and digitalization of production processes and logistics. The benefits in efficiency, cost savings and increasing speed were also quantified. It is clear that large companies are taking the lead in digitalization and Small and Medium-sized Enterprises are still lagging behind. This interesting Forum leads to the conclusion that digitization may be costly and laborious to begin with, but because of its structural advantages, it is an unavoidable development step for every manufacturing company.
