In response to the recent spike in stabbings locally, our crew have produced an easy-to-recall acronym and associated aide-memoire to help ambulance paramedics. The 'STAB-5' acronym aims to help paramedics manage the situation at the scene of a stabbing and get the patient on their way to hospital within five minutes of arriving. Publicly accessible defibrillators in the community are so essential. In over 90% of cases, when a bystander calls 999 in a medical emergency, a defib is deployed to the scene in case a patient's condition deteriorates. In less than 10% of cases the patient is either in, or at risk of going into, cardiac arrest. As a defibrillator can increase the chances of survival by 80%, moments matter in the chain of survival. The Circuit Guardians who look after these lifesaving devices up and down the country have a very important role, making sure that they are always maintained, operationally effective and available for use. This is Public Hearts Defibrillator number 56 and I actually checked it this morning only 2 hours ago. At 13.15, it was accessed to help someone in medical distress. Colin Frensham has gone down to retrieve, check it and to update The Circuit record if appropriate.The Ambulance Service are still on scene looking after the patient and the defib is still with them. Fortunately the patient is conscious, in very safe hands and we hope he recovers fully. Please can all Guardians check their defibrillators and access their Circuit account to make sure that all records are up to day and current. We have a number of pads that are due for replacing soon and we have these in readiness as well. STAB-5: Scene / safety Ten Second Triage / full stab check Assertive management Bleeding control (major) 5 minutes max on scene Learn more on the link below!
