What can we learn from the past, in order to build a different future? In 2024, The Amsterdam Fellowship will focus on the theme: 'Reclaiming Narratives: Where History and Activism Meet to Pave the Future.' Congratulations Anna on graduating! “The way the school allows you to flourish and prosper is unlike any other. Towards the end of the program, this datum never felt more real. They didn’t want you to do it for them. They wanted you to do it for yourself. I didn’t realize that the whole building was like a playground. There were so many things you could do as a type of hobby. Swinging on the monkey bars, going down the slide, sliding down the fire pole, etc. are all things done at a regular playground. This playground called Delphian had ceramics, advanced art, computer science, choir, sports, and a lot more that students were able to choose from. This building is where all the fun happens, and you decide the fun. If you want, you can only do the monkey bars, but can also do everything the playground has to offer. I decided to do many things at this playground. Each one of them brought me a step closer to flourishing and prospering. I have learned tools here that I know I would not have learned anywhere else. Since this playground didn’t force me to do all the things I didn’t like, I could tailor it how I wanted. This made me feel a sense of fun and excitement on the courses I did–the exact feelings you should feel on a playground. Thank you, Delphian for giving me the opportunity to flourish and prosper." #delphian #boardingschool #pnw #education #highschool #competencybasedlearning

A Light in Our Hands (For the 200th anniversary of Braille) Two hundred years, a silent flame, In darkness grew a brilliant name, A boy, young Louis, dared to dream, To stitch new hope into the seam. With fingers swift, he shaped the night, In dots, he carved the gift of sight, A code that spoke through touch alone, A language for the blind to own. Where once the world was closed and still, He opened doors with iron will, Each page, each line, a voice that soared, And freedom flowed through every word. Today, we honor that bold thread, That pulls the blind where they are led, The RNIB keeps that spark, A guiding light in places dark. Through Braille, the world is wide and bright, For hands that read by touch, not sight, In schools, in books, and on each wall, His dream still echoes, strong for all. So let us raise our voices high, For Braille’s a bridge that helps us fly, Across the years, across the seas, It lives in every mind that sees. #TheBlindPoet #Braille200 #LouisBraille #RNIB #BrailleLiteracy #BlindAwareness #InclusiveEducation #AccessibilityForAll #BlindCommunity #BrailleIsPower #VisionThroughTouch #CelebratingBraille #BreakingBarriers #EqualityInEducation This image is a colorful, illustrated page from the upcoming children’s book Austin’s Amazing Adventures: The Big Test, written by Dave Steele (The Blind Poet) and illustrated by Rebecca Price. The page features a globe surrounded by whimsical, playful characters such as astronauts, animals, and birds flying in the sky. At the bottom of the page, there is a line of text that reads: "So Miss Tierney and Austin each day would take the time to learn. And feeling with his fingers, he learnt his spellings line by line." Above the globe, there is another text box that explains Braille, describing how it helps the main character, Austin, succeed by feeling the embossed dots to read. This page will feature Braille elements, bringing tactile engagement to the story. The book is set to be released on October 10th, World Sight Day.

How can the environment influence behaviour and perception during a jewel heist? PhD researcher Diana Berzina and Associate Professor Donna Yates investigated the jewel heist during TEFAF Maastricht in 2022. 💎 The thieves and their costumes were all over the news, but also the onlookers who didn’t seem to be shocked by what happened in front of their nose were much bespoken. "Art fairs have been specifically designed to influence people. The atmosphere of an art fair is a deeply affective one. The way the crimes that are carried out in this space are affected by the ambience. Yet the same atmosphere also affects the way onlookers experience and interpret these crimes. While outside of the art fair the attire chosen by the thieves and muted reaction to a violent robbery seemed absurd, within the context of art fair both made perfect sense." In her blog on Law Blogs Maastricht, Diana talks us through hers and Donna’s research that gives answers to the question above! 💡 Read the blog here 👉 https://bit.ly/3ItvN82 #MaastrichtUniversity #FacultyofLaw #TEFAFMaastricht
