Taban Anthony Stephen works for the Ministry of Health in Juba, South Sudan. Here is what he learned from colleagues at Teach to Reach. “At Teach to Reach 9 I learned to work with existing structures such as health development committees, women’s groups, traditional birth attendants, and other NGOs. There were public private partnerships with health care providers. Some of the private health facilities were assessed with support from WHO. After the assessment, staff trained and the Expanded Program on Immunization initiated into those respective facilities, which were supplied with the necessary vaccines, cold boxes, ice packs, refrigerators and reporting tools in order to boost vaccination coverage and to ensure that children that might not be brought to the public health facilities get vaccinated, as well as to have comprehensive data that is a reflection of the whole country data.” Join colleagues from all over the world to meet, network, and learn at Teach to Reach. Together, we learn from each other to catalyze change at local level. Following the successful scale-up of #COVID19 #vaccination and #maternal and #child #health tracker in #Ghana's Savannah and North East regions, a combined team with representatives from USAID CHISU Program, the Center for Health Information Management of the Ghana Health Service and the Regional Health Directorate embarked on a follow-up technical support visit to 40 selected health facilities across the two regions. The visit aimed to assess how health service providers integrate the new digital intervention into service provision and to help resolve early implementation challenges. Despite some technical challenges identified and resolved, service providers are using data from the e-tracker application to identify defaulters of child health services and target them for domiciliary services.

Across conflict-affected areas in Ethiopia, the health system has been brought to a standstill. In Tigray, just 3% of all health facilities are fully functioning. In Amhara and Oromia, violence has caused significant strain on health facilities, limiting necessary resources. In response, we launched and recently concluded the deployment of Mobile Health and Nutrition Teams (MHNTs) in the Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions to deliver primary healthcare and emergency nutritional assistance. Additionally, Project HOPE was one of the first organizations to operate in the Tigray region after violence subsided and carried out a vaccination campaign to deliver the first set of COVID-19 vaccines to the area. The targets for routine vaccination will be difficult to achieve without systematic engagement of the informal health sector in Nigeria and some African countries. Informal health providers are usually the first contact for health care needs, and are sometimes the sole source of health care services for children in some communities. As the big catch-up plan gains momentum in Africa, it’s important for countries to contextualize their strategies and avoid “business as usual”. Relying on vaccination platforms like health facilities and outreaches might be insufficient. Zero-dose children are often concentrated in hard-to-reach rural areas, urban slums and conflict affect areas where functional health facilities are scarce. Therefore, approaches that leverage informal health care delivery platforms that are widely available in communities that people trust and use should be strongly considered. #vaccinessavelives #vaccineswork

In 2023, Kenya saw a slight decline in vaccination coverage. To address this, the National Vaccine and Immunization Program (NVIP) Technical Working Group (TWG), with Living Goods and other stakeholders, developed four strategies: policy interpretation and implementation, county leadership, statutory reporting, and capacity strengthening. The NVIP's key national focus areas for 2024 are development, regulation, commodity security, monitoring, evaluation, capacity strengthening, partnerships, and resource mobilization. We will work with county and national partners to align with the NVIP's focus. Other partners include World Health Organization, UNICEF, Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc., Ciheb Kenya, USAID, and the Ministry of Health, Kenya. #GlobalHealth, #LivingGoodsImpact#HealthPolicyKenya, #CapacityStrengthening, #PartnershipForHealth #HealthEquity, #NVIP2024
